Free agent talk

Figured we could use a central thread to talk about our FAs, FAs we may want\are rumored to be after, etc.

Here's a bleak article to kick it off:

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20...me+top+players

Also interesting to note the blurb about how we have no interest in Heatley, though not for financial reasons.

I would take Ward for two/three years at $1.5M, although I'd like to see Poile negotiate it down to $1.25M

I'm a little surprised they consider themselves so far apart from what Ward wants...is it because they can't afford to pay it or want him to prove more?

And what could FIDDLER be asking for that the two sides are so far apart?

Honestly, cut your losses with Fiddler. He is a scrappy player, but he is hardly irreplaceable. He certainly isn't worth more than Ward or much over a mil. In fact, I wouldn't give him a million dollar contract because his even strength play is very very replaceable.

With Ward, I think it is bluff. Poile should be able to get him at 950k-1.2M for a couple of years. He is a Fiddler, Smithson, Ortmeyer. You can't pay him more than that for one year with a higher goal count. Who else would give him ice time and top 6 minutes to get to that goal count? Not many teams and no good team. I think we sign Fids if we don't sign Ward. Otherwise we let him go.

I think, like it or not, this is the year of value signings for the Preds- think Bonk and Gelinas- while we wait for the cap to fall. Maybe a 1 year deal with a guy that we can offer incentives to b/c of age helps fill the bill. I could see a 1 year deal with Sully that has incentives even though he wants more than 1 year.

Anyone else wondering how we will get to the cap floor?

Poile's comments suggest that they are looking to resign Hamhuis and Rinne, however those would not impact next year's cap.

Additionally, is Poile really going to let 5 forwards go to UFA, and 3 defensemen to UFA. And that isn't counting Jones and Pihlstrom, assuming we even sign them.

That sounds like a huge roster turnover.

Of course this also could be to make sure that we are not over the 2010-11 midcap so we qualify for full revenue sharing. Of course they don't know what it will be, but perhaps could be preparing for the future.

Fiddler isn't really a NHL player. Not sure if Ward is, he did play well for one year but so did Arkhipov.

It IS a little concerning, since Poile has been going on about how they're "far apart" with these players, and how they hope to get something done but it's in Sullivan's court...only to find out there's been no offers? And if it IS a lack of a budget...that's pretty ridiculous on the part of the owners. It goes back to the Kariya thing...we were told that he wanted too much money and we couldn't retain him, despite our efforts...and then found out he was never offered a formal contract.

It'd be one thing if this was the first time.

One thing I thought about today is how would our penalty kill look next year? Quite a few of our PKers will be gone. So that might lead to an unpopular but necessary resigning of a Fiddler or Nichol.

Any chance Poile is talking to Sullivan's agent who has not yet found a proposal that he would take to Sullivan. It sounds like Sully hasn't seen an offer. Doesn't say his agent isn't talking to Poile. It's a ploy we've seen with other players to build sympathy for the player.

I would agree about Legwand and Smithson being our best PK fowards but Trotz needs 3 more as he likes to have 3 pairs of killers. I can see our free agent aquisitions having a requirement to play on the penalty kill.

Smithson-Pihlström
Legwand-Erat
???-Sullivan (This is part of why I suspect we sign a center, and I'd like it to be Bonk if we want to bring back one of our own.)

actually a pretty heavy amount of hockey talk on 104.5 this afternoon.

Mostly the three nitwits bantering back and forth with what we should do about Sullivan...apparently the holdup right now isn't money...we just don't want to give him more than 1 year, because he can't be insured...meanwhile, he's looking for two years. They were divided on whether or not you just give him what he wants because of his value to the franchise, or move on and not take the gamble. They did all agree that simply hoping prospects or value signings turn into pleasant surprises isn't going to work much longer, and the team is in danger on and off the ice if they don't find some way to score goals in a consistent manner and put a face with the franchise.

Pihlstrom saw more shorthanded ice time than Sullivan, genius.

back on topic,

you'd think that the trade deadline last year, free agency last year, the trade deadline this year, and the draft this year would have taught me a lesson, but call me a masochist...i just keep getting my hopes up.

Ah, disappointment. How delicious it can be.

Predators expect to lose players

Well it looks like Zanon and Fiddler is gone, which I can live with. And Poile is still negotiating with Ward and Sullivan - I'd really like to keep them ( for the right price of course) plus a mid level guy and vet d-man and we may be a competitive team...
