The Beatles- Rubber Soul 9/10

The best song of the album has to be Norwegian Wood (The Bird Has Flown)...I've been really addicted to the Beatles for a while, just really enjoy listening to their music.

Wilco - A.M. (7.5/10)

"I Must Be High" is probably my favourite Wilco song, and I'd call the rest of it solid but not their best. It's still half a notch below Being There and Summerteeth and a good ways' off from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

jamie xx & gil scot-heron - we're new here, 8.1/10

there's some filler in there no doubt, but there's 3 standout tracks that make it alllll worth it, the whole way through. funny how it works like that sometime.

great fast paced rock/alternative with a lot of high school nostalgia potential (for the right people anyway)

Its crazy how you're actually going through all these albums btw, especially if you're actually taking time to sit and listen, song for song. You have great taste too, btw.

Bonobo - Black Sands
Bonobo - Animal Magic
Flying Lotus - Reset EP
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
DJ Cam - Mad Blunted Jazz (all time classic)
DJ Shadow - Pre-emptive Strike
RJD2 - Since We Last Spoke (not as good as Deadringer but still worth a listen)
And something a bit different, instrumental dub/hip hop fusion/soul/funk = Salmonella Dub - Inside The Dub Plates

To be honest, I'm not. I'm kind of just skimming through everything and maybe half-paying attention to them in the background depending on how much I like it (I'm not trying to be too technical/critical about it, so I wouldn't take the number I give too seriously, especially if it's low). Unless it's something that everyone loves and gets mentioned all the time, or there's a reason to think it's going to be great (in which case I'll go out of my way to listen without break), I kind of do this thing where I listen until I get bored, and if I get bored, I get lazy and do a bit of skipping around or I leave it on in the background without really thinking about it. Then if a chunk of it actually gets my attention or seems interesting or seems to have potential, I usually go back and try it again without cheating. I'm not intently listening to music every minute of every day, if that's the impression you're getting. Mostly I'm just skimming around during bus rides/commutes/walks, listening more intently to the ones that interest me in bed before I pass out etc.

It's not a perfect system, clearly, but basically I just do it because I care about the ones that end up being 3.5-5s. The ones that I skim over, if something about them stays in my head, I might eventually get back to them some other time down the road.

Heck, if you see something in the 1-2.5 range, you could almost take it as "I barely even cared enough to listen to this, but here it is anyways". If something great seems way too low, I'd definitely encourage people to tell me to try it again and actually listen this time.

Instrumental hip-hop in particular, some of the stuff I ended up trying after Endtroducing and Deadringer just sounded really repetitive and boring to my ears. I'd like to be more patient and give everything a 100% shot (and it seems like alot of people on these boards encourage/demand it), but I just don't get enough consistent satisfaction doing that.

The ratings are more just signifiers of how much I got out of something regardless of whether or not I gave it a fair shot kind of thing.

The first few times I heard it, I wasn't really impressed either. My expectations were high because this album is so highly acclaimed, and I liked most of his other songs that I'd heard before. But my first impression of this was that it sounded like a long jam session, and a rather boring one at that.

But I'm glad I gave it another chance because it does sound a lot better the more times you listen to it and let it sink in. I still don't like it quite as much as everyone else does, but it is a very good album.

Noctourniquet by The Mars Volta. 8/10 - Definitely better than I expected after hearing "The Malkin Jewel". Outside of TMJ and The Whip Hand; this album is stellar. It's got great rhythm, some beautiful guitar work and Cedric's singing is really amazing on this album.

thegodmachine by Phinehas- 6.5/10. Has some absolutely fantastic tracks on the album that give me hope for the genre still, but it's not consistent enough. Half the album is great, other half, not so much.

Leveler by August Burns Red- 7/10. First play through, I loved every song, but it's fallen off a bit since. Solid, solid album.

Darkness In The Light by Unearth- 6/10. Pretty surprising album, not generally a fan of them, but a couple good tracks on here.

Neon by Chris Young- 5/10. Few catchy tracks, but not a fan of the album as a whole. One or two songs I keep coming back to, though.

Kendrick Lamar - Section.80 - 8.6/10, damn fine hip hop album. Freshest stuff I've heard in quite awhile. Great replay value.

Xzibit - At The Speed of Life - 7.5/10, his debut album. Good beats, above average rhymes, probably still his best album. Only one standout track though, and that was "Paparazzi".

John Tejada - Cleaning Sounds Is a Filthy Business - 7.1/10, from 2006. Still sounds pretty cutting edge compared to the tech house coming out today. Deep, lots of twists and turns, sounds being put against each other. Very trippy album.

Alabama Shakes - Boys and Girls - 9/10 - Can't get enough of it. Like Janis Joplin recorded an album with the Black Keys. Simply amazing.

The Lumineers - The Lumineers - 7/10- Good album. That Alabama Shakes album is the gold standard for me right now though.

Trampled by Turtles - Stars and Satellites - 7.5/10 - A little too twangy for me at times, but definitely a talented band.

Zola Jesus - Conatus - 9/10 - Sounds a bit like Florence Welch.

Youth Lagoon - 9.5/10 - Can't get enough of this album either. This and M83 are probably the two artists that I keep going back to.
