Man on the Moon: The End of Day by KiD CuDi

I'd give it an 8/10. Really good flow to all of it, and Ratatat's production on some of the pieces fits in perfectly. Namely: Pursuit of Happiness.

Pat Metheny/Charlie Haden/Beyond the Missouri Sky—great late night jazz album; should not be played before 2 :00 AM--10/10

Vieux Farka Toure/Fondo--incredibly talented young guitarist from Mali--9/10

Metric/Fantasies—the album deserves more praise than it’s been getting--7/10

various Sao Paulo punk, post-punk rock bands/The Sex Life of Savages—straight rock isn't Brazil's strong suit but this is a more than decent compilation--7/10

8/10 Same score from me...very nice flow to the whole album. Only a few songs that I didn't like. Favorite songs in order would be -

Soundtrack to My Life
Pursuit of Happiness
Simple As
Alive

It isn't really an album, but more or less a collections of songs I found on youtube by a band in Sweden called Sound Riot. I found them through a combination of this thread, lastfm, google, and youtube in about 1.5 hours.

I like the sound a lot.
Sound Riot: 7.5/10

Here's a youtube link to one of their songs (Sorry I don't know how to embed).

40 Years of the award-winning, moving music of NFL Films in a 10 cd collection. Although the earlier songs of the 60's and 70's are pretty mediocre the later CD's contain more modern orchestral works which are amazing to listen to.

Quite possibly the best anthology in the history of music.

10/10

Muse - The Resistance - 6/10

I think Matt Bellamy needs to find some new songwriting influences. There were times during some of the tracks where I couldn't help but roll my eyes at some of the remarkably lame lyrics. "Undisclosed Desires" almost sounds like a boy band song. I guess it could be considered a positive, though, that the rest of the album isn't as bad about political rhetoric as "Uprising" and "United States of Eurasia" were. In a bit of an ironic twist, the music on the album feels rather suppressed and forced when compared to their previous albums. The wild, distorted guitar riffs that I love so dearly are virtually nonexistent; Bellamy rarely breaks into falsetto; the driving bass feels more subdued in favor of pianos, string sections, and synthesizers on most tracks. It's a very different Muse this time around from past efforts. The sound runs all over the place, too, like the album as ADD, and it's a wonder that it works at all. However, with all of that said, I give credit to the trio for a very ambitious undertaking in the form of the Exogenesis symphony, which I found quite remarkable.

It's not that the album is necessarily bad, it's just that it's not good. None of the non-symphonic songs really blew me away as anything special. I hear a few songs with potential, and they'll probably grow on me, but I'm ultimately disappointed with the effort. Hopefully their next album will be a return to form. I may still buy this one if it grows on me after a few listens, but my expectations still aren't very high.

=========

On another note, I had a couple of albums I wanted to revisit after sitting through them several times each this past week:

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away - 7.5/10 (The first eight or nine tracks are great, but it kind of tails off at the end for me.)
Franz Ferdinand - Tonight - 7.5/10 - The more I come back to this album, the more I enjoy it. Yes, Franz overhauled their sound, and no, I'm not normally a fan of that sort of thing (see my scores on the Radiohead library on the first page), but most of the tracks are full of rambunctious energy. It's great to just get up and dance to (which was the intent, according to Kapranos). I'm still not totally sold on it, and I wish they'd left the prolonged synth solo out of "Lucid Dreams," but it's not really as bad as my initial reactions to it would have led someone to believe, which, for the record, amounted to something like this:

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away - 9/10 - This is just an excellent album. It's a bit off-the-wall, but it feels more polished than their previous efforts. It's diverse, but common threads run throughout the songs, and nothing really sticks out as a "where the hell did that come from?!" kind of song. It's fun, it's quirky, and it's really captivating to listen to. It's a pretty wild ride, evoking (or attempting to evoke) a broad range of thought and emotion. Any fan of indie rock should pick this one up, if you can find it.

Dethklok-Dethalbum 9.6/10

This album rules. Songs like Murmaider, Kill You (lol, a great metal song for the ladies) and Thunderhorse. If you watch Metalocalypse, you'd know how brutal these guys are.

Dethklok-Dethalbum 2 8.4/10

This one isn't as good as the first CD. Songs like Laser Canon Deth Sentence and Murmaider 2 are cool though.

I agree 100%. Usually I'll skip that song, I've just heard it too many times.

Muse/The Resistance: some very good songs mixed in with one absolute howler and some romantic schmaltz --6.5/10
Miles Davis/In a Silent Way: some great fusion jazz from a prolific source--8.5/10
Paulo Moura/Rio Nocturne: one of Brazilian jazz saxophone great's finest albums--10/10

Muse - The Resistance 8/10.

Mew - No More Stories / Are Told Today / I'm Sorry / They Washed Away / No More Stories / The World Is Grey / I'm Tired / Let's Wash Away - 10/10

Just found out about Mew at the last NIN concert on Aug 29th, they were a nice suprise and the new album is pretty good.

Thrice - Beggars (8.8/10)

I like it more every time I listen. "Circles" and "Talking Through Glass/We Move Like Swing Sets" are probably my two favorites at the moment.

-------

Medeski, Martin & Wood - Radiolarians I (8.4/10)

A 3-piece jazz "avant-groove" band, as Last.fm describes them. Don't really care about the "avant-groove" grouping, I just think they make some sweet music.
