the real poll should be:

Gagner at 24 vs. Kesler at 24

Gagner would win

The real poll should be Gagner at 28 vs Kesler at 28. Kesler will win.

We are comparing a player who just had a breakout season to a player that suffered the sophomore jinx. Not really fair.

When Ryan Kesler was 18 he was playing at ohio state putting up 31 points in 40 games.

When Sam Gagner was 18 he was playing in the NHL putting up 49 in 79.

Ryan Kesler is basically Sean Horcoff with a much nicer contract.

Sam Gagner is... well we don't know yet. Give my Kesler today, Gagner tommorrow.

What a joke, sigh... I live on the west coast and I can see why so many Canucks fans are the way they are.

Horcoff is extremely quick, I don't know what you are talking about. He won fastest skater competition at the 08 All Star Game. I know this is not very official, but I doubt Kesler will ever see an ASG let alone win the skating competition.

Grit, yes... Kesler is grittier I will give you that much.

Defense - don't think so. Horcoff was 2nd on our team in +- despite being used in a mainly defensive role. Kesler was 7th in +- on the Canucks. (Last year). Horcoff has the same FO% as Kesler despite taking double the faceoffs (most in the league! last year).

So that's your reason why Horcoff is just as good defensively as a Selke nominee? You are entitled to your opinion, but wow. The faceoff stat doesn't apply as much because Kesler became a winger when Sundin signed.

I do not ever see Kessler being a TRUE first or second line guy...sure he may have those duties now, but its due to lack of depth upfront on the Canucks end...

I think Gagner has a MUCH heigher ceiling and has potential to be a a TRUE first or second line player... I would take Gagner over Kesler every time

Do a poll who is better defensivly. Horcoff won't get a single vote outside of homerism.

Honestly, this is a tough poll.

I bet even if you gave this poll to the GMs it would be tighter then you think. Would any serious playoff contender not pick Kesler right now? Hard-nosed, leader, physical, PKs, shot-blocks, 60pts, total energy package. The guy is a warrior.

Whereas, what rebuilding GM wouldn't pick Gagne? 80pt upside - anyone?

what an odd...

....poll.

You have a major award finalist against a kid with potential who had a soph year decline in play. Not only that, totally different styles of players.

What is next, a poll about Steve Ott versus Alex Tanguay?

I think every playoff team would take Kesler and every team thats in rebuild mode would probably take Gagner because of the potential he has.

I think Gagner will become a consistent 70 point 1st/2nd line player in the future. Kesler will probably be a 50-60 point shutdown center.

Not according to dropyourgloves.com (I find it much better at judging fights, they actually administer each user to make sure there's no bias and you have put a review even a blank one and not just vote on the winner):
http://www.dropyourgloves.com/Fights...23#Fight167623

11 reviews, six draws called, four narrow wins for Kesler and one clear win for Kesler. And I fondly remember the fight and would have given a narrow win to Kesler.

Neither guy really lands anything that looks that significant but Kesler throws a couple that appear to land cleaner than anything Gagner threw.

You gotta admit, when you saw Gagner and Kesler squaring off you would expect Kesler to clean his clock. It was either a draw or narrow win for either player.

I'd call the fight a draw with Gagner winning the situation(or at least he would have if there wasn't a minute left in the game) since he was the major under dog. Like Laraque says, unless he completely dominates a guy, that guy wins just because his bench gets pumped up from watching him stand in their and fight a bigger guy.

@ some of the comments in this thread. All due respect to Gagner who's a fine hockey player in his own right, but comments like:

Quote:

are pretty funny to look back on. Not only is Kesler succeeding as a 2nd line center, he's carrying his line. NHL.com shows Kesler as the 20th highest scoring center in this league so far this year (in terms of points). Considering that a couple teams have more than one guy in the top 30, that'd put Kesler as a 1st line center on most teams, let alone a 2nd liner.

I'm not saying Kesler is a 1st line player, but I'd seriously hope those doubting his abilities to be a true 2nd line center would rescind those comments after how he's shown himself thus far this season. Combine that with the defensive prowess, penalty, killing, hitting, intensity, and leadership he brings and this poll is not even close.

Gagner has the potential to be a great player, but he provides a team with nowhere near the impact a Ryan Kesler does. I think every single GM (even Tambo if you got him off the record) would tell you they'd take Kesler over Gagner.

What a weird comparison. A 24 year old two way center vs a 20 year old budding offensive center.

I'll tell you in 4 years.
