Unless the Red Sox completely fall apart, we should take the wild card.

The Rangers have 23 games remaining, here is their scheduale:

LA Angels (7)
Seattle (6)
Tampa Bay (3)
Oakland (7)

Thats pretty rough. As a comparison, the Red Sox have 23 games remaining, here is their scheduale:

Baltimore (4)
Tampa Bay (3)
Cleveland (3)
LA Angels (3)
Kansas City (4)
Yankees (3)
Toronto (3)

I like the Sox chances with that scheduale.

Actually Boston still has 24 games left as you missed 1 game against Cleveland. There are 2 things going in the Red Sox favour right now - they have 14 home games left while Texas only has 12 and Boston plays their last 7 games at home while Texas plays their last 7 games on the road. The Wild Card spot looks pretty good right now as the remaining schedule definately favours Boston.

Yeah good call. With a scheduale like that, if the Sox cant get in, they dont deserve it.

I hate the phrase " it's theirs to lose " but it really does apply to Boston and this year's Wild Card spot. Right now the Red Sox are 2 games ahead of Texas with only 23 games left. Even if the Sox go 13 - 10 the rest of the way Texas would have to go 16 - 7 to beat them out and I just don't see that happening. Dammit - now I've probably gone and jinxed the whole thing.

In other encouraging news, Dice-K's rehab start today went really well.

I'd like to see him get at least two more good starts at AAA before coming back, though. This whole season has been a nightmare for him.

Can anyone offer any insight into what he was talking about with his arm a couple months back? I know he backtracked and said he'll go by their system, etc. etc. etc., but it was a long statement of disagreeing with their training regimen and a short one to retract it. From what I understand, he was basically griping that he doesn't have the arm strength he used to have because the Sox don't want to work him out that way, right?

I know he's training differently, but other guys have done just fine when coming over. Is it that he's having a much harder time in the MLB than he expected?

AAA's season is over, thats why he was in Salem, sicne they are the only team still playing. There's really no reason to drag out his rehab starts anymore than they have, especially with Wakefield hurt again and Byrd as your 5th starter.

I think that crap he was talking about earlier was based on the fact that he believed that he lacked the arm strength because he wasnt allowed the train the way he did in Japan throwing every day, etc. Whereas the Sox wanted him on a more regular scheduale like every other pitcher on their roster.

Right, but in the start before last he gave up 2 HR in 4.1 innings and he had an awful start in AA recently. One good start in the minors doesn't answer all the question marks about him.

Sure, but there are no more opportunities for minor league rehab starts. So he either pitches in Boston or he doesn't pitch. I think the choice is obvious at this point. Give him a couple of starts to see what he can do. Paul Byrd is always around to throw junk and hope for the best if no other alternatives become available.

Yep - all we can do is hope for the best at this point. Give him some starts but have Byrd loose just in case?

I don't share the opinion that the Sox have the Wild Card all sewn up so I'm wary of throwing away games at this point. But between injuries, questionable starts, and lack of experience, the playoff rotation isn't the best and that makes it worth handing Dice a few starts to see what he can do.

Starting Daisuke really isn't any worse than Paul Byrd. Both guys could be classified as "throwaway" guys, and I'd rather get a look at Daisuke a few times. For all his faults, and issues this year, he has a much, much better chance of helping this club in October than Paul Byrd. After the 3 game series with LAA next week, the schedule eases up anyway. If he bombs, oh well. Byrd is more than capable of 7 ER in 2 innings. We saw that last week.

Yeah, there's no avoiding the potential for throwing away games in that spot (or really those 2 spots) in the rotation. I would just go with the guy who has the most upside for helping this team in the playoffs. I think that's DiceK, Bowden, Byrd, Tazawa in that order. Tazawa I think just isn't ready yet. Bowden probably isn't either, but why the hell not?

After next Monday's off day, there are no more off days built into the schedule, so hopefully they can also duct-tape Wakefield's back together and lobby MLB for a motorized wheelchair exemption so he can cover 1st base a bit more quickly.

Per Boston.com

Daisuke Matsuzaka will return to the Red Sox on Tuesday, manager Terry Francona said. Paul Byrd, who had previously occupied that slot, is in a holding pattern.

For the weekend, Josh Beckett will still pitch Saturday. On Sunday, Clay Buchholz will start the noon game of the doubleheader, and Jon Lester, who threw 23 pitches tonight, will start the 5 p.m. game Sunday.

Sounds good too me.
