Fast game so far.

Good pitching from Wake and catching from Martinez.

Maybe it's all muscle from all the working out he did during his time on the DL.

Well, that was an important win.

Wakefield looked surprisingly tremendous, and Ortiz with the 2 homers and walkoff. If Wake can get himself on a role, that really would be huge for the team. I don't really expect much from him, and still would suffer hallucinations if he's starting a playoff game, but he could be huge down the stretch here. At the very least, eat up innings to keep the bullpen somewhat rested, which is something Penny couldn't do.

I know it's just one game, but Victor looked great with the knuckleball tonight. I hope this means we won't be wasting a potential playoff roster spot on George Kottaras.

That's because of this myth that Doug Mirabelli is the only human on the planet that can catch it. Really, we know of 1 things and that's that Josh Bard cannot catch it. No problems with anyone else. Cash, Mirabelli, Kottaras, Martinez. And hell, Varitek caught him back in the pre-Mirabelli days. It is one of the biggest myths around.

It's not so much that I don't think anyone outside of Doug can catch it, it's more of the fact that Martinez literally had a BP session and a pitching machine to learn how to catch it properly, whereas all the aformentioned people had spring training to do so.

just saw on baseball tonight that martinez used a first basemans glove to catch wake, because the pockets bigger and gives him more margin for error... wonder why no one else has done this with wake

Doug Mirabelli did, as did Kevin Cash. They really make this into a more of a story than it is. Josh Bard sucks, and is a backup for Washington. That sums it up.

Sox released Penny.

He asked to be let go.

So on to the senior circuit of the NL now, just like old friend (emphasis on old) John Smoltz?

Didn't Cleveland used to have a knuckleballer while he was there?

And I'm sure the Red Sox were only too happy to grant his wish. I know I don't regard this as any big loss, anyway.

Big Ifs, I know but if Daisuke or Buchholz can be decent-good #4's and Wakefield doesn't self-destruct in September as he often does, the Red Sox are still a scary team to face in the playoffs.

And I had almost written them off a couple weeks ago.

I think this team is built more for the playoffs than the long haul of a season anyways, with the way their pitching lines up in a short series. Especially if Wakefield remains effective, and/or Dice-K comes back and is decent.

Anytime you can run Beckett-Lester out there 4 times in a 7 game series, you should like your chances for winning.

David Ortiz has hit the most home runs since June 6th.... 21.

Any ideas as to why Penny asked for his release?

Because with Wakefield back he wasn't going to get a chance to start for the Sox anymore, and nor should he since he''s been downright awful for the last month and a half, especially with Tazawa pitching well so far. He didn't want to accept a bullpen assignment, so rather than do that he wanted a chance to sign with an NL team and start, especially before 8/31 so he could pitch in the postseason.

Still thinks he can be a starter. The Sox have Beckett, Lester, Buchholz, Wakefield, Tazawa, and sooner or later Matsuzaka as their starting pitching corps with Paul Byrd as a wild card.

Penny's second half numbers have always been pretty terrible.

They couldn't waive him because he was already waived, another team claimed him, and the Sox revoked the waiver.

Call me a Liar, but I walked in the room in the bottom of the ninth, just as Bay made the first out, and I sat down on my couch and said to Dad, damn Papi's already got a HR tonight, think he can do it right now? he said Nope. Sure enough next swing it goes around the pole I think that is going to be a real confidence booster for this team, and MAYBE just MAYBE they are getting their identity back from 04' and 07' They'll need to keep the pitching up, Beckett has to bounce back after Tazawa, they'll be getting Dice-K Back, and the lineup can keep up the contributions and hopefully put a nice string of W's down the stretch here.

Go Sox!

He said all the right things on his way out. I'm not too disappointed with his performance in a Sox uniform, all in all. Yeah, he had his typical 2nd half swoon, but it's a credit to the organization that they have better options and not necessarily an indication that Penny is done as a pitcher. As bad as his numbers are, he still survived a good stretch as a starting pitcher in the toughest division in baseball. It's not easy to do that and I'm pretty sure he'll have modest success in the NL if that's where he ends up. He'll never get good hitters out consistently with his 1-pitch arsenal though.

Completely changing gears:
http://www.projo.com/pawsox/content/...11cf740e2.html
Lowrie had another setback last night. I don't know what the deal is but that surgery doesn't seem to have done the trick. Hopefully he's not done before he ever started but it seems like, for this season, the Sox will have to live with Chris Woodward or some other version of Gil Velasquez as the emergency middle infielder and, for next season, the merry-go-round of SS will probably continue.
