Benn Ferriero???

Quote:
Instead of signing a retread veteran off the free agent pile, Doug Wilson has dipped into the college free agent pool and signed the former 7th round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes, Benn Ferriero to a two year, $1.27M deal worth $635k a season.

Who the hell is Benn Ferriero? Well, I just spent the last few moments trying to figure it out myself. Here is the limited amount of info that I know.

- In his four year college career, Ferriero totaled 165 games, 64 goals, 75 assists and 194 PIM’s.
- He scored the game winning goal vs. Notre Dame in the Frozen Four consolation game.
- He never signed with Phoenix in 2006, making him a UFA this summer.
- HockeyFuture.com describes Ferriero as “a tenacious, fiercly competitive forward who plays equally well at both ends of the ice. He has shown the willingness to go to and take punishment in front of the net to create scoring opportunities.”
I want opinions from the prospect gurus here.

Interesting... Anyone know anything about this guy, I really don't know much about NCAA hockey. Less than I should at least.

Not on any of the news services yet.

Cap geek is the source for hockeyanalysis' post.

Capgeek.com broke a few other signings recently.

It's a pretty generous contract too, eh? I wanna be friends with Doug... I would never be asked to pay for anything.

Well. if the HF description is true i like him - descriptions like tenacious, fiercly competitive, willingness to go to and take punishment in front of the net to create scoring opportunities are just what we need in prospects and NHL rostered players.

PS - i'm not a prospect guru.

Yes. It is an ELS contract which is by definition two-way.

Not really. League minimum is like $500k. ELS max is like $900k.

Hell, if he works hard every shift, pursues the puck "tenaciously" and is not afraid to get hit, put him on the bottom 6. Why not?

This kid had a lot of scouts in his corner just a couple years ago, if he can bounce back after a tough 08-09 season (the entire BC team struggled) it could be a solid addition for the Sharks.

Here's a scouting report

I'm confused. We still don't have Mitchell signed, but we sign a potential 3rd/4th line center beforehand while we're nearing the cap? I would think this is purely for Woostah purposes, and would be surprised if he cracked the team out of training camp.

This might be a dumb question, but if he isn't in the opening day lineup, does his salary count against the cap?

No player in Worcester counts againt SJ's cap (unless it's for an injury rehab assignment)...

Could be that DW is waiting to trade some $$ out of the team (NHL caliber) before signing Mitchell.

Thanks Max, once again the sharks look to have found a gem prospect that's been passed over by other teams. I look forward to hearing more about him and his game this season.

too early to be calling him a gem prospect...too early to call him anything except an additional body. While his potential is possibly exciting, let's let him play a few games in our organization before we start throwing labels around.
