There is no way in hell, Gillis will pull a Sutter and get ****ed over by the cap. That would only leave us with .15K not enough for the rest of the season. Demitra just seems the most logical player to be traded. With the return we can get it might not be that bad we could potentially have a prospect that will be ready to slide in next season.

Start Demitra on LTIR for a month. 14/82 games = 17%. 17% of $4 million is another $680,000.

This is one of the options Gillis was referring to when he said that there are plenty of ways the Canucks will be able to get under the cap by Oct. 1st.

It does not work that way.

No, that's just 680k that the Canucks can go over while Demo is on LTIR, I believe. Once Demitra is back, they'll be over the cap again. Basically, IIRC, it buys Gillis one month to get rid of one of O'Brien/Demitra/Wellwood/Lukowich/etc.

Or else I just made that up.

no the Canucks can go 4million over the cap while he is on LTIR. Once he comes back they have to be compliant again.

There are no cap savings when a player is on LTIR.

All Demitra being hurt would do is buy time for the team before someone has to go.

That OK - it is the NHL CBA after all.

The Blackhawks cannot figure out when and how to send out QO's and the Leafs cannot figure out Frogren had to be on an entry level deal - and they are SUPPOSED to know what they are doing.

That's why we needed to hire Pat Quinn. He's good at finding loopholes in the system (ie., manufacturing scoresheets out of thin air on a prospective prospect).

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/...t-kessel-buzz/

Now it's entirely possible that he's confusing this with the potential for the Sharks to get a compensatory pick out of not keeping White, but the way it's phrased doesn't make it seem like that's the case. Have any of you heard anything that could corroborate this?

If it's true and the trade could potentially be Ehrhoff/Lukowich for 2nd (Van)/2nd (compensatory)/Rahimi, it makes it not nearly as bad as a salary dump (although you guys still win the trade hands down)
David Pollak has now corrected his report and indicates the Sharks will receive a second round compensatory pick if White is not signed:
Quote:
There's a footnote to the Ehrhoff-Lukowich trade that brought prospects Patrick White and Daniel Rahimi to the Sharks from Vancouver.

White, the Canucks first-round pick in the 2007 entry draft, hasn't lived up to expectations playing college hockey at Minnesota. If the Sharks aren't satisfied with his development there and decide not to offer him a pro contract, San Jose will receive an extra second-round compensatory draft pick from the NHL under terms of the bargaining agreement.

Amusing snippet on NHL.com article reflecting on the Sharks/Canucks trade:

Quote:
"This trade speaks to the confidence we have in the young players coming up through our system who have earned the right to compete for a spot on this team," Wilson said, before underlining the acquisition of White, who has performed well at the University of Minnesota.
Emphasis mine.

Seems on par with the Sharks in house video interview where the host referred to the Sharks acquiring "two outstanding prospects".

I still can't believe we acquired two quality dmen for 2 players that aren't ever going to make an NHL squad.

You missed the interviewer who spoke with Doug Wilson after the trade and referred to White and Rahimi as "two outstanding prospects".

Drink Coke before watching the video otherwise you might wake up three hours later in a room unbeknownst to you.

Hate to be a bumper,

But as mentioned in the prospect thread, it seems as though Rahimi may refuse assignment to SJS's farm club Worchester and head back to play for Rogle in the SEL.

This is up there with the Luongo trade. We absolutely ***** the Sharks. I've been very enthusastic about both Ehrhoff and Lukowich after watching them this pre-season. I seriously doubt either White or Rahimi will ever play a NHL game. And to have Rahimi bounce out to Europe just makes this even funnier and more sweet. This is karma for knocking us out of the playoffs a few years ago.

Appears that way.

Patrick White for Ehrhoff and Lukowich.

Dave Nonis we all stand corrected...Patrick White was a hell of a draft pick!

Mind you, Lukowich may have to be waived or traded for cap reasons.

This deal could come down to Ehrhoff for a second round pick that we would have received for not signing White.

Bottom line is that there is not one of us here who would not make a move like that. So, regardless of whether we 'won' or not, it was a good trade.

That would be one "outstanding prospect" down and one to go.

The only way that the Sharks receive a 2 nd round pick is if White declines there offer and thats not likely

That is not true. As White is an NCAA player a bona fide offer is not required. This issue has been analyzed and discussed to death previously.

I guess you haven't read through any of the threads on this trade, since it's been mentioned in every one of them (including the ones on the trade board and the sharks board) that this is not the case, as he's a NCAA prospect... no offer has to be made by the Sharks to retain that 2nd round compensation.

To anyone who has caught an exhibition game yet:

How has Erhoff looked? I'm curious to see what his mobility will do to the blueline.
