Doug Wilson understands that the cap means you have to lose on deals sometimes.
Heatley to SJ is a mortal lock now.

okay, now sj has the cap space to pick up heatley. but who are they going to trade for him now that they've given away ehrhoff? it was going to be a package of ehrhoff, cheechoo, and prospects/picks. now what? ottawa will want at least two quality roster players, preferably a young defenseman, and sj aren't going to want to give up vlasic. will michalek, clowe, or even pavelski have to be part of the deal now? does ottawa even want marleau and his cap hit? thornton and heatley may very well end up scoring 5 million points together, but i can see them turning into a one line team, like ottawa was.
but what a deal for vancouver. park luko in manitoba or give him away. and probably swap bernier for futures. i hate to see him go, as he adds valuable size and grit, but he has the biggest contract of expendable players at the wing, and if injuries hit, there is still grabner and shirokov to call up.
EDIT: or, best case scenario, we package a few 2nd/3rd line tweener pieces like bernier, raymond, and welly for a cheap bona fide 1st/2nd line scorer. very unlikely, but i can dream. come on LA, you know you want our spare parts for frolov.

With Schneider now signed I'm guessing it will be Lukowitch to the Moose and Demetra moved for whatever he brings. Works for me.
Don't need to trade Demitra.
Putting Lukowich, Rome, and Nycholat in the minors puts the team to about 1 mill over the cap (if schneider signed for 1.5) and then if Hodgson makes the team Wellwood can be traded/waived or Hodgson gets sent down putting the Canucks under the cap.
Fack, moving Bieksa just makes sense now. We've got his offense covered, and SOB makes up for the toughness. Plus we can probably get a really good top-six forward on a cheap deal for Juice. I hate losing Bieksa though.
But he's the only toughness in the d-corps that can play 20+ minutes. Salo, or even Mitchell if they make it clear they won't be extending him makes more sense to me. Gillis said he won't ask someone to waive their NTC, but it doesn't mean he won't put a player in a situation that they want to leave and ask to be moved.
good trade. but why do so many people want to waive/buy out etc Demitra? yes he is soft and I don't really like him as a player, but this team still has a weak top 6 at forward. Even if they get a good forward in a future trade involving a defenceman, they still would likely need demitra's offence.
Listening to the radio on the way back from the gym I haerd Blake Price mention that the Canucks had picked up some D-men but he didn't mention who. My first thoughts were "Christ I hope we didn't do something stupid like trade for Jones or sign Bergeron". Then I get home and read this. Unbelievable. Gilles absolutely FLEECED the Sharks.
It is a little alarming that Ehrhoff was the only regular defender on SJ who was a minus for the season last year. And not a little minus, either: -12.
Ehrhoff was a bit of a victim of the percentages this season - San Jose's even strength save percentage on the season was .924 but only .903 when Ehrhoff was on the ice. Shot quality wouldn't explain that big of a difference.
That said, he's still not a strong even strength player, but I don't think he's any worse than a guy like Bieksa.
Just wanted to point out (shout out to parabola) that I had previosly started two threads on this board about the possibility of acquiring Erhoff. One proposal was for Hansen straight across and was laughed at unmercifully I don't know guys...maybe you give Peter too much of a hard time
nuckfaninTO wrote a while ago in one of those threads:
I'm not a big fan of Ehrhoff... especially not at his salary.
He is a good offensive dman, but makes way too many mistakes... can't see that fitting in too well on the Canucks.
He was also a -12 last year, on a very good Sharks team... that was the worst +/- on the team (Moen was -18, but was only a -1 as a Shark).... at -12, he was also the only minus regular on their defense (with Blake and Vlasic leading the way with a +15).
That's a huge discrepancy among players on the same team.
Personally, instead of locking up $3.1mill on a dman like Ehrhoff - while giving up assets to get him, I'd rather spend that type of money on Seidenberg... or Morris in FA.
Just wondering if you are still feeling the same way??? Thanks.
