The "Teams we're watching" thread

Since we're firmly ensconced in the playoff race, I thought it might be a nifty idea to keep a daily track on teams that are either right below or right above us in the standings. Naturally, thought-provoking conversation shall ensue

I'LL START!!

As of now, we have 50 POINTS in 45 GAMES

Kings 2
Jackets 3(OT)

Oh sure, Jackets. Wait until OVERTIME to beat them, so they get a point. They probably did it to spite us

kings-(45 GP, 47 points)

Wild 4
Pens 2

Pens had a 2-0 lead...and blew it. Thanks a lot, guys.

wild- 46 gp, 45 points

Yotes 3
Wings 3

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I was pushing for a Wings win. Oh well. Still 3 points behind us.

Phoenix- 45 GP, 47 points
Detroit- 47 GP, 62 points

Games of relevance for 1-17-04

Wild at Blues

- in this one, we've got to pull for the Wild. You generally want the teams AHEAD of you to lose. The ones behind us can be kept behind us. We'll go for the Wild, and is it so hard to cheer against the Blues, anyway?

Sharks at Avalanche

- This is a tough one, but I'd say we're going for the Sharks in this one, because while the Sharks don't appear to have much competition for the Pacific division, the Avs could possibly end up losing the Northwest to Vancouver, which would put them in the 4th\5th range...that is...on our radar. It's a stretch, but we have to consider everything. Go Sharks.

Stars at Flames

- Like the Wild\Blues, we need to be pulling for the guys behind us, especially since a Calgary loss here combined with a Nashville win...and we're in sixth place. GO STARS!

Ducks at Nucks

-Kind of meaningless, but by the same theory I used for Colorado...GO DUCKS. They're kind of in a harmless place anyway, so that's one more loss for a playoff team ahead of us.

I'm a firm believer in take care of yourself and everything else will fall in place. Sometimes you start looking around, and you miss whats right in your own backyard.

to an extent, i agree...but a little help never hurts. part of the fun of being in the hunt is that you get to take an active interest in what's going on around you.

I think for playoff sake we pull for the nucks...... I mean who do you really believe we are more likely to be gunning for the last couple of playoff spots with... Vancouver...or the Ducks?

Actually, we probably want to pull for the Blues.....the reason being that barring a major collapse, the Blues are going to make the playoffs, right? So really, we're competing with the Wild at this point.....so I'd rather root for the Blues until the Wild get so far behind that they're out of the playoff race....then we can start worrying about having the Blues lose to help our seed in the playoffs.

well, everyone has their own philosophy. i just think that the teams ahead of you are the ones that have YOU in their control. the teams behind us...we're in control of our own fate, as far as they go.

If we get lucky and all the teams I want to lose come up short, this is how the standings will look.

4. St. Louis 44 games 54 points (loses to Minnesota)
5. San Jose 46 games 53 points (loses to Colorado)
6. Nashville 46 games 52 points (beats Edmonton)
7. Calgary 44 games 51 points (loses to Dallas)
8. Phoenix 45 games 47 points (DNP)
9. Los Ang. 45 games 47 points (DNP)
10. Minnesota 47 games 47 points (beats St. Louis)
11. Dallas 46 games 48 points (beats Calgary)

I take a much more aggressive approach. It has huge potential to backfire, but it could also land us a legit top 5 seed. I don't mind the teams behind us picking up a few points at the expense of teams right in front of us.

Your dream almost came true.

St Louis and Minny tied. San Jose beat Avs. Nashville won. Calgary lost.

tonight, blue jackets repeatedly got the lead(3-1, at one point) and...once again...couldn't hold it. edmonton gets a point as the oilers tie the jackets 4-4. they now have 45 points in 47 games, 7 behind us.

The Hawks...well...they're the Hawks, and the Kings finally got a win, which vaulted them into 8th place, 49 points in 46 games, 3 points behind us.

We'll be trying our best to make this playoff run as difficult as possible for you guys. Free points all around!

Seriously, I hope you guys get in, I like to see other teams get in besides the usual ones. Just saw a highlight during the Lightning-Avs game, looks like the ole barn is getting full.

Blues 2
Panthers 1

Blues pull it off in OT to stay 3 points ahead of us

Sharks 2
Wings 1

More than likely, the Sharks are going to win the Pacific, so really...we need Detroit to lose every game they can. Why not? Why just make the playoffs when...well...stranger things have happened . The Wings have 7 points more than we do. Seven points.

Flames 5
Ducks 1

This is just bad, all around. Had a chance to put the Flames a comfy 3 points behind. The game on Thursday is going to be huuuuuuge. Gut check time.

Avs 5
Lightning 4

Not a huge deal, but would have been nice if the Bolts could have pulled it off. Avs win the game on a Hejduk penalty shot in OT.

Stars 3
Nucks 2

The good news? The Nuckers are struggling at home...just in time for our visit, on Sunday . The bad news? The Stars refuse to go away.

all in all...the night didn't really go our way, but...the most important game went the way we needed it to...ours. Help from other teams is nice, but winning is the sure-fire way to ensure our success.

Blues at Blue Jackets
Here's hoping the BJ's can pull one out for us. Would take one of the games in hand that STL has on us.

Avalanche at Panthers
We are only 7 points behind the Avs, let's go Panthers!!!

Blackhawks at Wild
Chicago, please don't let the Wild build up ANY steam, to make a late season push.

Sharks at Coyotes
Gonna go for a Sharks win in this one, since they are a division leader that we cannot pass, unless LA or someone takes over that division, which I just don't see.

Lightning at Canucks
5 points back of the Canucks, and if they lose this game we have 2 games in hand on them. Go TBL!!

Red Wings at Mighty Ducks
Come on Giguere, back to playoff form for just one game!!! Hopefully the Wings haven't figured him out yet.
