Best Boss Battle In A Video Game

I really love boss battles in video games but I certainly have my favorites.

The reason I started this thread was because my friend and I were discussing this and the first boss battle that popped into my head was the Hydra battle on the opening level of God of War. How epic was that thing?

I'm also tossing in the epic boss battles from Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star IV, Mike Tyson from Mike Tysons Punch Out!, Ganon from OoT, Seven Force from Gunstar Heroes, The Colossus from Shadow of the Colossus, and Bob the Goldfish from Earthworm Jim (only because its hysterical).

What are your favorites?

that Hydra was the first thing that came to my mind.

God of War 2's first boss battle was also quite epic.

Dead Space's ending was also quite intimidating when i first saw it. I was like 'oh ****, i'm so ****ed now.' heh.

Tyson in Punch Out!

Its like, oh **** son, it's Mike Tyson!!!

Or the end of Mario Bros. By the time you get to the guy, your palms are so sweaty, you're down to your last life. And then you **** his **** up, and you're so happy.

I don't know about the best, but Jack Of Blades from Fable was one of the worst. Somehow he was strong enough to clean out the Guild's HQ including the guildmaster himself, but a few long distance arrows is apparently all it takes to kill him because he stands still the whole fight. A huge letdown to an awesome game.

BioShock's final boss wasn't quite as easy as Jack of Blades, but was still a big letdown after a tremendous game.

A few off the top of my head:

Nightmare - Devil May Cry
The Boss - MGS3
Mother Brain - Super Metroid
Psycho Mantis - MGS1

Wow I forgot all about the end of Dead Space, easily one of the coolest boss fights ever. I loved that game so much. I can't believe EA made it

And one more thing, the sound design in Dead Space is easily some of the best in any game ever. Creeps me out in every way.

People need to stop givin' EA such a hard time. They've cleaned it up for real lately.

Try the end "battle" to Fable 2. Most disappointing ending of a game I've ever experienced.

EA is 10x better then they used to be. Sure they still release some crap games, then again what company doesn't, but they take chances on some games that other companies wouldn't release.

Exactly. Though I'm baffled as to why they decided to drop Grand Slam Tennis for the 360 and PS3.

Good list also. I really only like 2 MGS games -- the first one and snake eater (which is probably the best one imo),and I agree Psycho Mantis is pure awesome.

YES!

Also MGS3's battle against The End was amazing. The fact that if you hide long enough he can just die without you having to do anything was cool.

Spoil:
Did anyone kill him at that chance before the actual battle? And then have to just fight soldiers? That was cool they did that

I also liked water boss in RE4

Yeah they have improved the NHL series and Dead Space was a pleasant shock, not sure about the rest of their franchises.

Or the last battle in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. What a waste.

I love MGS2, probably my favorite in the series, but as far as bosses go MGS1 and MGS3 are better.

I don't think Tennis games sell well enough to warrant spending money on them. See how sales are on the Wii and go from there. Remember EA lost a ******** of money last year and they seem to be cutting out the fat. They also canceled the NASCAR franchise. It wouldn't surprise me to see a version of the game next year however. For those titles it will probably be an every few years release schedule. kind of like how they handle the Fight Night franchise and the new MMA series.

it doesn't sell that well. I don't think any version of that game has ever broken 300k in sales(I'm not 100% sure). Regardless it's a game that is likely to sell better on the Wii then the 360/PS3 just like Tiger Woods.

As I said it won't surprise me to see it next year or after just not now. I just don't see a huge demand for it. Who knows perhaps they are working on a Natal/PS3 motion controller version for next year.

Pretty much anything from God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, or Metal Gear. Those games know how to do boss fights.

I read about it but I never actually did it myself. A fun thing to do is start the battle with him, then change your PS2 clock to a few days later. Then reload the game and the guy will be dead of old age

The End and Psycho Mantis... Two of the most memorable boss fights ever, easily the best due to how you beat them.

Honorable mention to:

For hilarity.

As far as RPGs, it's all about Kefka.

The last fight between Snake and Ocelot was something to remember. It starts off with real high-fidelity moves and superhuman reflexes... and it degrades into two old men just beating the hell out of each other, too tired to stand, just taking wild swipes.
