Flyers add Quad City (IHL) to minor league affilates

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=497391

Quote:
“The Flyers are pleased to add Quad City as one of our affiliates,” said Holmgren. “The Mallards have a great tradition of success in their market on and off the ice, and we look forward to a great working relationship.”

The Mallards join the Adirondack Phantoms, the Flyers’ primary affiliate of the American Hockey League, and the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL, as the Flyers’ minor league affiliates. Terms of the affiliation agreement allow the Flyers to assign a limited number of players to the Mallards’ roster at any time during the 2009-10 season.

The IHL is some serious trash hockey.

I have a friend who is a huge Fort Wayne Komets fan, so he'll be pissed. He was already pissed we affiliated with the K-Wings.

I honestly thought the IHL was dissolved a few years ago...

How is it compared to other leagues? I'd assume ECHL<IHL<AHL, but is it on par with the Slovak league or Denmark? Czech? I'll also assume that IHL<SM-liiga<SEL.

It's a new incarnation of the IHL. Under this one, the Komets have won both Championships. It's basically part of the old UHL.

Pretty sure it would be IHL, ECHL, then AHL.

Quad City lost their AHL affiliate (the Flames) to Abbotsford, BC for the upcoming season.

Which has always been a notorious trash league haha. I don't know if they changed things but you always heard more faces were being hit with sticks than pucks.

Add the CHL to the mix and it's more like IHL, CHL, ECHL and AHL.

The Mallards will probably get a goalie and maybe one position player.

BTW, the new IHL isn't "part" of the UHL it is the new name of the UHL (much like the UHL was the new name of the CoHL). I haven't been to a UHL game in a few years, but it's not a very high level of hockey. IMO the ECHL blows it away.

it is the old UHL, they just changed the league name in 2007

compared to the AHL it's trash hockey, but i played summer hockey a few times with a guy who's in the IHL and he was skating circles around everyone. It just made me imagine how good those NHLers really are.

The echl is much better than the ihl. I have college buddies that wanted to avoid the real world and desk jobs that just went and played ihl after a year or two off of hockey completely

The old IHL I liked when it was basically the AHL. Now it's a joke. As far as pay goes it is a touch better than the ECHL and CHL (per player average, they have a larger roster to work with as well)but not necessarily in play quality. ECHL teams that have NHL affiliation can get an extra $200 a week (or is $400?) in salary cap which puts them right with the IHL, but even with the higher pay teams have a hard time getting players for the IHL. I have a good buddy who used to work for the WPHL (which bought out the CHL) and his take is that the quality of pay is better in IHL but the quality of play is better in the ECHL. He says that if guys know all they'll ever be is a minor pro hockey player they'll go the IHL for the small pay increase, but if they have any aspirations of playing at any level higher, even the AHL, that they'll stay in the ECHL. The CHL is actively trying to make affiliates with the NHL teams to be a sort of "alternative" to the ECHL but I don't know how it is going. They seem to be a fairly well run league, and have better attendance than the ECHL, but nowhere near the number of teams and virtually no player to come from there has ever done anything of consequence.

Which brings to the question of what the heck happened to Freddy Cabana? This time last year there were guys thinking he had an outside chance at getting a cup of coffee in the NHL, and by the end of the year he was playing in a semi-pro league below all the ones mentioned here.

And before it was the UHL wasn't it like the Colonial league or some name like that?

I know what you mean about the quality of players. In college I played with a guy who was a very average player in the WHL a few years before (he was a Flyers pick too by the way). He couldn't cut the mustard at any of the prospect camps but he sure made the rest of us look like junk. I think his best year in the WHL he had something like 3 or 4 goals but for us he was a 5 point a game guy.
