Van-Minn-Ottawa (Heatley)

I posted this trade in the Ottawa message boards and it received support:

To Ott: Burns, Demitra, (Lukowich)
To Min: Heatley, Bieksa
To Van: PM Bouchard, Lee + Min 1st

Its been adopted by other posters to include Lukowich to Ottawa as well, although this hurts Ottawa salary wise, whereas I believe without Lukowich it solves both salary problems for Van & Ott (I'm no capologist).

Its been getting good support from both Van & Ott fans in another thread, so I thought I'd put it out there.

Why does Vancouver do this? How does it make the team better? Hint: It doesn't.

Nope.

Here's why:

Gillis has already said he wants MORE 40+ point defenders as opposed to less. Bieksa picked up 42 (off the top of my head) last season. We are going to need to have a defence consisting of Bieksa/Salo/Mitchell/Edler/Ehrhoff/Schneider-O'Brien if we are going to compete with Calgary's back end.

MG is nuts, I believe he wants something like 200 points out of our blueline. Haha.

Haven't seen much, if anything, of Lee, so maybe I'm undervaluing things here. But if we really ARE making room for Mats Sundin, then PMB is redundant, as he would either have to play wing or play on the third line (Where we already have a ****storm for that spot: Hodgson vs. Wellwood).

So that's why I think Vancouver would say no. In a nutshell.

are you crazy?
if for no other reason than you dump luko, demitra and pick up 3 assets you could likely immediately trade for anything better than you just traded.

that would be tremendous asset management by the Canucks.

i think ottawa is probably giving too much but this is the world that heatley has created, i could at least live with it.

Why not just:

To Ott: Burns, PM Bouchard, Min 1st
To Min: Heatley, Lee

Vancouver doesn't need/want to be in this trade.

They can even keep their 1st round pick. Done and done.

For Heatley and Bieksa they would, or at least they should for that package. i think a lot of burns but that's a good deal for minny.

Minnie can keep the first and I'd do it.

I don't know much about Lee so it would depend on how big of a gap there is between him and Bieksa.

It helps us cut a bit of cap and I would be mostly excited about how low that Minnesota 1st rounder could go... but them getting Heatley and Bieksa would probably take it out of a top 5 - 10 pick so I wouldn't risk that.

Biggest reason I wouldn't do it is because Demitra's contract ends next year... PMB has like 5 more years at a 4m cap hit. Also from what I know about him I don't know if Brian Lee will be able to fill in Bieksa's shoes now or ever for that matter, even if he has the potential to. This would create bigger cap problems next year even if it saves us a bit from them now.

Not a terrible deal but I wouldn't be that excited about it.

The trade becomes heavily slanted in Vancouver's favor if Bieksa is out and Salo is no. No one wants Salo. Hell, some of our fans don't want Salo.

this 3 way is actually pretty good..i like it because the Canucks could then package Schneider with a 1st and try to get somethign that they will actually use (considering luongo is going to sign a deal that will keep him with the canucks 384948 years)

that's absolutely ridiculous minny does not get ****ed. they get one of the best offensive players in the game, and one of the more complete d men in the game.
Good offence (42pts i think), good defensively and will drop the gloves and beat the **** out of anyone other than the heavyweights on the other team.

please explain how you feel minny gets bent over, that's just nonsense.

PMB contract isn't the greatest. His last season isn't exactly enticing, neither is the length of his contract or his height.

We gain around $3 million-ish in cap space, but then we're stuck with him as our second line center. Assuming Hodgson's development goes well, he'll eventually slot into the second line, and then we end up paying PMB $4 million to play on the third line.

Also, Burrows.

You're a giant turd if you don't want Salo as a Canucks fan. He may miss 20 games a season but when he's not there our defense suffers SO MUCH for it. I don't see how you don't realize the enormous positive effect he has.

haha gotta be better than that stellar group of offensive d men we started last year with

My understanding was PMB was playing wing anyways...

Is he now? I guess if this trade did go through, it'd be more palatable knowing he can play wing. But we're banking on Demo's contract to expire next year so we can have a bunch of cap space to resign our core players (Luongo, Kesler, Mitchell for starters), and hopefully Demitra too [I actually like him].

With said cap space, we could potentially be in the running for another team trying to dump players with 'huge' contracts in our laps, seeing as how the cap is expected to go down.

Last part was someone else's idea, forgot who.

Why would Vancouver help someone in their division get Heatley?
