I am still not sure if letting Zherdev was the right decision. I personally liked the way he played (except the last few games under Torts when he looked lost) and wasn't happy about his departure. But after reading a few of his interviews my opinion about him (as a person - and therefore as a player) becomes less and less positive. He was either assured by his agent that he will have a nice contract with an NHL team very soon or he is so desperate b/c nobody showed strong interest in signing him. The amount of interviews he's given recently and the way he answers the questions make me believe in latter. He pretends there is a big line of teams (probably 29? :-)) that are willing to offer a contract (with the $$$ that satisfy him) and he is kindly considering them having Detroit (which has no cap space) as a priority in mind. Only a few teams (and obviously they are not Cup contenders) have enough cap space to sign him for $4+ mil he wanted. If he signs with Atlanta (they may do it trying to satisfy Kovalchuk) he will probably be doing fine there for some time but what if Kovalchuk departs anyway? Atlanta will not have a superstar and nobody on the team will be able to carry the game. Management becomes unhappy. Then Zherdev becomes unhappy and so on ... But it won't be the Rangers problem ...

USA today's Kevin Allen just wrote on twitter that his hunch is Atlanta will not sign zherdev. Allen is thisclose to Atlanta GM don waddell so he would know what is going on with that team. He also wrote waddell thinks kovulchuk will re-up with them.

John Anderson. He used to coach their minor league team in Chicago. Former Leaf player.

huh. I figure coaching is going to be a big issue for Atlanta, in that it could make or break their chances. Overall they have the potential to be a playoff team, but they've always managed to underachieve

I my be wrong ,but I thought that given the Rangers qualified Zheredev if he signed with another team for less they have the right to match or would have to be compensated .

If the Thrashers sign Zherdev, I see an extremely talented, and extremely one-dimensional, top 6 that will put up a huge amount of points while also seeing their opponents drop a TON of goals right back on them. They'd be a borderline playoff team that would get absolutely smoked once the games tighten up.

The previous Cba had a matching provision with arbitration.

They think that getting another Russian who plays a similar style of hockey might make Kovalchuk happy.

Clearly your statement is false....why didn't a team do so if that is true? For a month we read about how Zherdev was worth $4.0mm and he has yet to sign a contract a month after being made a free agent.

Zherdev and Kovalchuk don't really play similar styles of hockey.

I have a feeling even Kovalchuk will grow tired of Zherdev.

They do sort of play similar styles.

The difference is desire. Kovalchuk is a bigger, stronger, and better version of Zherdev to start...but he'd also skate through his own mother if it meant scoring a goal.

I guess they their styles are vaguely similar, but Zherdev is much more a perimeter player. Zherdev is like a pirahna and Kovalchuk is a shark. One is just annoying, the other is devastating.

Kovalchuk is more comparable to Ovechkin.

If the guy signs a deal close to our arbitration offer that he rejected, then it is just more proof that he's too much of a dandy to play for a coach that will call him out on being soft when the going gets tough.

Zherdev is always looking for the perfect pass to get into a high quality scoring area to shoot, instead of creating one himself. Thats the difference between the two.

Zherdev is actually a little more dynamic in getting the puck to other players than Kovalchuk, but when it comes to scoring goals and making the plays necessary to support your teammates in the corners and around the net, Kovalchuk is superior at this compared to Zherdev.

That gives them pretty decent depth up front if true.

Watch him sign for 3.25 M.
RangerBoy said 1.5 was their offer.

As frustrating as Zherdev was, and I can't believe I'm saying this, our secondary is weak enough right now that I would be glad to sign him. And then Kovalchuk comes to NY to be with his best friend Nik.

Nope, that's a great top 6.

Kovalchuk (100 points is definitely possible)
Kane (Awesome potential, playing with a superstar, 60-70 points possible)
Kozlov (Consistent, PPG is possible)

Zherdev (60 points possible)
Little (70-80 points)
Antropov (60 points)

Than mix and match them on the powerplay and you have a legit threat. I don't see how that's so shocking.

I was never an Antropov fan, but gained a lot respect for him after really getting to watch him play every night. If i had to choose one or the other now, Antro all day.

Seriously. Forget Zherdev. Worry about getting the best goalie coach and conditioning trainer you can find for Kari.
