Oilers, Sens and Sharks

To OTT: Dustin Penner, Milan Michalek and Logan Couture
To SJS: Dany Heatley
To EDM: Jonathan Cheechoo

The rumored package that SJ offered for Heatley was Cheechoo, Michalek and Couture, but apparently Bryan Murray doesn't want Cheechoo but does want Penner.

Enter the Oilers, who trade Penner to the Sharks for Cheechoo straight up, which allow the Sharks to then substitute Penner for Cheechoo in their original package.

I don't want Heatley. Also I think the Sharks would rather give up picks instead of Couture

that actually works on paper, yet it depends on Edmonton. Cheechoo is cheaper then Penner, but do they want to get ride of Penner that bad?

Cheech for penner? No freakin way from the oilers pov

EDIT:
Penner may be overpaid, but he is more than capable of scoring 25+ goals

Cheech has gone downhill every season.......and the saving is only like 1.3 mill

Good proposal, except that Edmonton really has no incentive to do this. It cost them a lot to get Penner, and I'm sure they will want to hang on to him and see how he does with a new coach rather than downgrade to Cheechoo just to save a million in cap space.

I have high hopes that Penner's game will turn around (as he has been reportedly training harder this off-season), but even with increased production, I don't think he'll put up more than 30G, 60pts - and thats if he plays up to expectation. Cheechoo has declined, but plays the type of game the Oilers lacked last year - hard on the boards, hard on the forecheck - he brings a much more physical game than Penner. He has that first shot scoring ability and gets a lot of shots away. If the deal went down, I wouldn't mind this top 6

POS-Horcoff-Hemsky
Cogliano-Gagner-Cheechoo

It saves the Oil 1.25mil per, and Cheechoo's deal expires one year earlier. If both players continued to underperform, I know which one I'd rather have.

Put me down as a yes, would like to hear what Ottawa fans think of it.

Penner is also the only guy in the Oilers top 6 that is heavier than 205 pounds. We get rid of him and Horcoff becomes the muscle....that's not a good thing.

I really think that Doug Wilson is going hold on to Cheechoo for the first few months of the season to showcase him on Thornton's line. When/if he proves he's still got his touch (and from the way he played in the playoffs, it looks like he's still got it), then DW will shop him around.

But until then, yeah, the Oilers don't have much incentive to give up on Penner to take on a different gamble with Cheechoo.

SJ doesn't give up couture.

Replace with second.

Nope, nah! I really don't want Penner. The only guy I'm really digging in that trade is Michalek...

Sharks would still need cap room, say goodbye to Clowe or Blake.

Yeah your insane! San Jose isn't going to get Heatley that easily. Ottawa needs Couture or McGinn and Joslin. Bryan Murray will not be low balled.

I'm in doubt if Edmonton would want to do this. They probably should move Penner for a change of scenery though.

Oooo, I like Clowe. Things are potentially improving: I like Clowe and Michalek now!

Yep I'm crazy in the coconut.

The Senators may keep their malcontent, and best of luck to them in the upcoming season. San Jose already got fleeced once this offseason, no need ti do it again.

I like the deal. I'd take Penner over Cheechoo any day.

Replacing Couture with a 2nd is now being low balled? lol

Having a whole new coaching staff is pretty much like a change of scenery. Esspecially considering Penner probably got the shortest end of the stick from Mact.

In your mind it is but in reality it's not. Heatley's not worth Penner, Michalek, and a 2nd much less Couture. I'm not saying Couture isn't more valuable but going from him to a 2nd in the proposal is not a low ball for Heatley considering the circumstances.

I don't mean that way. He creates room for Hemsky and Horcoff. He's great in front of the net and it takes a couple guys to get the puck away from him along the boards. When Penner is winning battles against two guys in the corner or battling for ice in front of the net, Hemsky has a lot of time and space once the puck gets on his stick.

...and he does stick up for his teammates the situation calls for it.

Gotta love MacT. He defends Hemsky and doesn't play another shift.

Assuming that Cheechoo only has one year left on his contract... Edmonton could go either in this deal.

Pros:
1.Edmonton will have a lot of cap space after next season.
2.Gagner might finally have a good sniper to pass to.
3.We'll finally get to see some proposals on the boards which don't include Heatley, Penner and Cheechoo.

Cons:
1.Cheechoo has sucked since he had that sweet season. If you can't score playing for the Sharks, then what use could you possibly be to all the other teams out there?
2.Penner for Cheechoo means losing more size on a team which already has way too many micro-machines in the line-up.
3. With Penner gone who's going to play on the left side? O'Sullivan on the first, Moreau isn't worthy of the 2nd line and neither is Nilson. Pretty messed up on the left side. Edmonton would need to try to swing another deal to bring in a left winger before the beginning of the season unless they're hoping Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson is ready for the NHL... and I refuse to believe that he is.

Well, Cheech did pot 37 (I think) the year after his 56 goal season. He is definitely capable, its just that he has been injured more often than not since that year. But yeah, he has definitely been heading downhill ever since his Rocket Richard year ...
