Stars win, 4-3.

Brayden Schenn was the other linemate.

With Schenn and Glennie both being first round picks this year, I'm thinking we got a pretty big steal with Calvert in the 5th round.

If Calvert keeps this up he'll find himself in the AHL instead of the WHL. Training camp will be telling for him. Is he signed yet?

No, and I think you'd be crazy to keep a kid who can play in the Memorial Cup and play him in the AHL..

Is there anything else Calvert has to learn in the WHL? He's small, so he has some growing to do, but he's proven he can score in the WHL. Does he play on the penalty kill? Does he need to improve defensively? Is there any other areas of his game he still need to improve until he can make the leap to pro hockey?

While I understand Brandon fans want to win the Memorial Cup, is there any point to a 19/20 year old dominating younger players?

Calvert seems to have the potential (at minimum) to replace Geoff Platt in Syracuse. Maybe more, and since scoring is the problem the Jackets have, it would be nice to speed along Calvert's development. If he can do that best in the WHL, then that's fine. But he shouldn't go back just because they're hosting the Memorial Cup, when he can go help Syracuse make the playoffs.

Crazy, no. You're a Wheaties fan, so you have bias, but I understand wanting your junior squad to be they best they can be, especially when they are hosting the Mem Cup. That said, if the guys who get paid the big bucks think he's better served playing against men in the AHL, then that's what he's going to do. There isn't much purpose in having continue playing in junior except that he is a part of a team that is guaranteed a spot in the best junior tourny in the world. The high level of competition is the only boon.

Most guys in his situation woudn't play their overage season in junior. Who are the other 20s in Brandon this year?

If Calvert plays another year of jr. won't that affect (for him favorably) how much his ELC is? A 5th rounder gets 'x' amount right compared to a first rounder, correct?

Financially, if he plays and does well, he could really make himself some extra scratch.

He still hasn't absolutely dominated junior hockey. Was he good last year? Yep. Has he got more? Yep

Most guys aren't in his situation. You can't teach guys how to win. and the mem cup is an unbelievable developmental experience.

Aulie won't be back, but he had progressed through juniors, playing at the WJC etc..

Point is, development wise, it probably wouldn't hurt him to play one more year of juniors, if Brandon wasn't hosting the mem cup, Id say he should probably move on, but its tough to argue against sending him back to juniors and getting that big game experience.

He could sign with CBJ right now and still play junior. There is no set amount a player gets in a contract depending on where hes drafted.

Most teams probably have an idea of what "first round money etc" is, but there is no defined salary for a 5th rounder.

Hed go back into the draft next summer if hes not signed by June 1st I think?

I thought there was some funny rule in place that if he isn't signed by August of next year he just becomes a FA but I don't really know...anyone?

According to Puckrakers, Moore and Blumqvist didn't play, yesterday, because the team is trying to give everyone a day off. It would be a shame if Calvert's day off is today and he won't get the chance to top the tourney scoring!

Wait ... we have guys named Loverock and Brock McBride trying out for us?

Two more notches in the all porn-name team.

2-1 Thrash, 2nd intermission. CBJ goal by Regner (Caria,Jordan). Lots of penalties in the 2nd and Calvert is playing.

Would love to see Legein and Calvert both in the Cuse this season and both tear it up! To put Calvert a 20 year old in December in Juniors is a bad choice and sending the wrong message. He should be in the A or in Columbus and anything else is a slap in the face. 20 year old's are not Jr's anymore.

Holly Gunning's HF Writeup on final game:

Quote:
"While the level of play in the seventh-place game was not as high as the others, it did offer more drama. The Blue Jackets' rag-tag team of largely invitees came back from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime and a shootout.

Stefan Legein was extremely good for Columbus, seemingly everywhere. The feisty winger hounds the puck and regularly beats defenders with bursts of speed. He scored a clutch go-ahead goal late in the third period, but it didn't stand up.

For the Thrashers, Evander Kane was the standout. He scored two goals from right beside the net, exactly where he's been scoring from all tournament long. That's not to say that he doesn't perform well in open ice, because he will regularly go into heavy traffic and still manage to get a shot off. But those aren't the shots that are going in for him. He's scoring very opportunistically on garbage around the net. He finished the tournament tied for the goal lead with five.

Matt Calvert, who finished the tournament tied for first in the scoring race with Aaron Palushaj with seven points, again today showed how aggressively he plays the game by taking a boarding penalty against Cody Sol who has six inches on him.

Less impressive was Jeremy Morin, who showed a single dimension of goal scoring, to the point of not passing when his teammate had a better angle on the net.

Brent Regner's goal was from the circle, going in glove side high on Chris Carrozzi. Brock McBride's goal was a quick cross-ice pass through the crease from Darren Archibald. Danick Paquette scored on a rebound to the side of the net. He did not return to the game after a fight with Zak Ray.

Each team scored two in the five-man shootout -- Morin, Kane, Caria and Clark -- so it was on to sudden-death shooting. Levko Koper, a plugger, was the unlikely hero, who went high on Andrew Loverock for the win."

Nice work, Holly, and thanks to the entire HF staff for their coverage!

Ya it's his choice and I don't think theres any doubt he's coming back to Brandon. To have a chance to lead your hometown team in the Memorial Cup is once and a lifetime. I grew up with Matt and I'm sure this means alot to him. And if I had the choice I would name him captain this year over Brayden Schenn.

I think it would be great for him to go back and play in that tourney. You can't replace that type of pressure/experience. Go Matt!
