Further Demitra update and speculation on roster moves needed to bring him on board:
Quote:
Pavol Demitra's progress towards a return to the lineup contintues to go well. His legs feel great and his surgically repaired left shoulder is pain-free to shoot the puck..

The Slovak forward skated in two on two drills in the Canucks practice on Friday at GM Place and said he just needs to be confident in contact drills before declaring himself ready to return to the lineup.

“My shoulder has been improving a lot in the last three weeks,” said Demitra, who hasn't played since injuring his shoulder in last May's playoff series with Chicago.

“Three weeks ago I had a hard time raising the puck. Today I am shooting almost 100 per cent. I am just hoping it's going to keep improving. Starting next week I am going to jump in those (puck) battles and see how it's going.”
...
Demitra said he's still a ways away from returning and doesn't have a clear timeline yet. He had surgery repair torn labrum in May and had to have a second procedure in September.

“I have to take a long time to warm (the shoulder) up,” he said. “I really have to work on it. I have to come here in the gym, like two hours before. I can't just come here and skate right away. That stuff has to improve and I'll do more pushing and hitting in the gym.”

But Demitra said he's expecting to be ready to play big minutes once he does come back.

“I want to be ready,” he said. “My legs are feeling great. I'm skating well. I feel like I am in game shape.”

Injured Canuck Pavol Demitra, out all season due to shoulder surgery last spring, continues to make progress and engaged in a few battle drills Friday to further test the shoulder.

“It’s doing very good,” said Demitra, 35. “Obviously it’s a very good thing when every day you’re feeling better and better and stronger. Shooting is pain-free.”

Demitra’s sense of humour has apparently returned along with his health. Asked to assess his strength in the battle drills, he replied: “We played two-on-two but that was against Hordy [Darcy Hordichuk] and I don’t know if that counts.”

Bernier day to day with a groin injury, Hansen back in. RJ skated with team today for first time since foot injury. Salo back in tonight.

According to capgeek.com Johnson is on LTIR (16 days to this point from 27 December 2009) and therefore not eligible to come back onto the roster until at least 24 days have elapsed AND 10 games have been played. That would be Thursday 21 January 2010 against the Stars at home as Game #11 missed.

When did Bernier hurt his groin? Was that when he avoided contact with Regehr?

We need to get the "all things groinal" expert, Tommy Boy Larscheid on this story.

According to Botchford, Demitra is travelling with the team and while he will not play tonight, Saturday against the Penguins is a possibility.

Oh nice. Wow, ok, so what happens to our lineup? This will be very interesting to see what happens to Wellwood.

Thanks for the update for those of us who don't follow the Botch.

I'd expect Bolduc will be out for some time - he didn't look right after the fight tonight.

If Johnson's ready, I'd suppose he slides into that spot, though Demitra's apparantly quite close as well.

I don't think Johnson is eligible to come off LTIR yet.

Right you are.

So either Demitra or a call up, I guess?

If Demitra is indeed back, I can imagine them calling up Bliznak for Bolduc. I can't see the Canucks putting Wellwood onto the fourth line, and they'll probably scratch him instead. Otherwise, perhaps we will actually see Grabner back for Pittsburgh?

Bolduc is being evaluated by team medical staff, though he left the ice at the Excel Energy Center immediately following the scrap and didn’t return.

Some good news on the injury front: Steve Bernier, a staple in the Canucks’ fore checking recipe, was back on the ice Thursday morning following a groin injury in trench battle against the Calgary Flames Saturday.

He’s still listed as day-to-day.

Both Pavol Demitra and Ryan Johnson both skated hard and participated in all drills. Despite traveling with the rest of the team to Minnesota, neither saw the ice, though reports suggest they could see action as soon as Saturday.

Although Kristen Reid said Bernier skated by himself.

Wow, it'll be nice to see him get into the lineup. Should be an offensive boost!

Team 1040 reporting Demitra back to play with Wellwood and Bernier.

Jason Botchford says Bernier will not play:
Quote:
Steve Bernier will not play tomorrow. It's unclear right now who will play on the Demitra-Wellwood line.

Seems a bit early to say Bernier is out for tomorrow. I noticed he was on the ice practicing with the team today and was skating fine. I guess we'll find out, Demitra-Wellwood-Bernier could potentially be a productive line.

According to Botchford, Bernier left practice early and that is usually a pretty good indication a player is not good to go.
