AV talking about Mitchell on the Team 1040: He's really concerned about Mitchell. Got a text a week or so ago that said he was sympton free but then a couple days later got another text saying that some symptons came back.

He's real concerned with Mitchell. He didn't want to say it but he said that the season COULD be in jepoardy. At the very least it sounds like Mitchell looks like he's going to be out for a little while longer if not the rest of the season.

He also spoke about Bieksa and he said Bieksa is going on the road trip and it could be a week or two before he's back. AV does expect him to play on this road trip sometime.

It sounds like Mitchell will be going to LTIR.

Bieksa is subtraction by addition.

I know Bieksa can make some boneheaded plays and take some bad penalties, but that doesn't take away from the fact he's still a pretty decent defenceman(top 4), he plays hard, he hits, he fights, and more often than not he puts up the points. Not to mention I'm pretty sure our record is much better with him in the lineup.

Can't believe anyone would prefer Rome/Lukowich/Baumgartner in the lineup over Bieksa. Like him or not, he's going to be a huge upgrade over that trio when he gets back in the lineup.

And particularly needed if Mitchell could be lost for the remainder of the season.

With Bieksa and Mitchell going down for extended periods of time, the Canucks have managed to stay in the top end of the play-off race. Credit should be given to Gillis who saw a season lost before when there was insufficient depth on the blue line and went out and did something about it. While Rome, Lukowich and Baumgartner are clearly not top four guys they can play at the NHL level and eat up valuable minutes.

The last word I saw was that he is done for the year.

Gillis confirmed this yesterday when speaking of acquiring Yan Stastny:

“We wanted to add some more depth at centre ice and have a player we could bring up,” Gillis explained. “With Alex Bolduc out for the season, that would probably be the role he would fit in.”

Wow, thanks. I kept reading on here he was done, but I hadn't had that confirmed. Cheers

I just heard on the Team 1040 sports update that Gillis was on the radio this morning and he said that he does NOT expect Mitchell to be back in the lineup until the playoffs.

Bieksa is about a week away and Gillis sounds less and less enthusiastic about Mitchell's return in near future.

On Wednesday during his post-trade deadline presser Gillis said Bieksa was expected back in 10-14 days. So he is getting closer - here is hoping there is no setback.

So it will be a question then of swapping Bieksa off LTIR and placing Mitchell on. That will prevent any salary having to be moved out to bring Bieksa back on the roster.

Conspiracy theory time - maybe MG doesn't expect Mitchell to come back until after playoffs because all parties involved are aware that the Canucks do not have the cap space to remove him from LTIR until the regular season is over.

Maybe but if Bernier does have a sports hernia and he does require surgery then he'll likely be out for the rest of the season and cap space is no longer a concern.

Even right now cap space isn't that much of a problem.

They could fit under the cap by waiving Hordichuk and going with a 23 man roster as follows:

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Raymond-Kesler-Demitra
Samuelsson-Wellwood-Hansen
Rypien-Johnson-Glass
Bernier

Edler-Salo
Ehrhoff-Bieksa
SOB-Alberts
Rome-Mitchell

Those 23 players just barely get us under the cap but as long as Mitchell is out and on LTIR we'll have more than enough wiggle room.

If Mitchell and Bernier are ready to go before the end of the season then that 23 man roster fits under the cap but from everything we've heard it does appear that Mitchell is likely done until the playoffs and Bernier could also possibily be done for a while.

Funny how injuries have been working out so far. Every time a player gets back another goes down right in time for Gillis not to do anything significant.

It just goes to show you how astute a GM Mike Gillis really is.

Not really anything super new but here is what Botchford just said:

RE Mitchell: Not exercising, so you can figure it out. Best case is playoffs

RE Bieksa: "It seems he's about a week away"

Canucks forward Steve Bernier has a sports hernia

By Botchford Wed, Mar 10 2010 COMMENTS(0) The White Towel

This should explain a lot.

The Canucks have learned Steve Bernier has a sports hernia which has limited his skating and kept him off the ice since March 2. The small abdominal tear requires surgery and the early indication is he will miss about four weeks. That means he could still return for the first round of the playoffs.

Bernier first started having issues, and missing games, in January. It was thought then he had a groin injury. Bernier left the Canucks last week and saw an abdominal specialist Tuesday in Vancouver, when he was diagnosed with a sports hernia.

He had 10 goals in his first 45 games, but has just one in his past 21.

Explains his sudden drop in play. Good to know it isn't because he's just been bad.
