If I were in charge in Ottawa, I would offer sheet him and take less than fair value for Heatley. Just cut the losses (which Kessel may well offset although I think Heatley is a more complete player) and move on.

interesting that we are hearing a 1st, 2nd and 3rd is fair value because the price was way larger than that a couple of months ago...

A kessel deal will likely be 2 years so that Kessel has another chance at RFA, but thats just my opinion.

Id love the Islanders to make a trade for him. There offense in a couple years would be amazing.
Joenssu-Tavares-Okposo/Kessel
Bergenheim-Bailey-Kessel/Okposo
Comeau-Neilsen-Hunter
xxx-Trivino-xxx

It will never happen but its nice to dream. What would it cost for Kessel? DeHann, Trivino, 2010 2nd, 2011 1st?

Shero trades Dupuis for a pick, and gets Kessel 1 year at 3.5M.

This is what happens in a salary cap NHL when the second/third contract is obsolete.

It'll be interesting to watch, as long as the Islanders stay the hell out of this it will make for great entertainment.

You forgot Colorado, but they wont be in the mix for Kessel.

You don't want Kessel on the Island? He pretty much solidifies our forward group.

Tavares-Weight-Okposo
Bergenheim-Bailey-Kessel
Comeau-Nielsen-Hunter
Tambellini-Park-Jackman

Without someone like Kessel, we don't have anyone worthy of 2nd line RW status except maybe Hunter, but I like him with Nielsen.

I would give up plenty to get Kessel, we have the right players for him to click with, especially Weight, Bailey, and Nielsen, all playmaking centers who can set the puck to him pretty nicely (although not as nice as Savard and Krejci but that's just the risk that has to be taken). He may not score 30 goals, but he's definitely a 25 goal scorer with these guys. I'd gladly give up next year's 1st round pick.

While I don't disagree, I think it would make more sense for them to give into his demands then let it get to an offer sheet. They keep saying they will match any offer so why not just make that offer yourself, and save face. They let this saga go on too long, and now Kessel and Boston management no longer get along, which could hurt them down the road. Also, he's asking for around $4.5 million. I'd say there's a good chance that a team signs him to an offer sheet for more than that - likely around $5 million. So not only will they have to match that offer and trim players to make room, but they will have to make more room than they would have if they signed him on their own terms.

Have there been any trade rumours out of NY or NAS? I'd be surprised if BOS asking price is lower than the three picks they'd receive in compensation.

If the Bruins were prepared to walk away from him, you'd think it would make more sense to sign and trade him instead of waiting for an offer sheet they'll have to match.

He must be asking for the moon. I think that with all the talent that Boston has with expiring contracts, they may need to make an "example" out of him. If he's not willing to be reasonable in his salary demands, then he can't expect to play for a contender.

Phil Kessel has made it clear that he doesn't intend to negotiate any longer with the Bruins, his Toronto-based agent in recent days informing the Boston front office that the right winger's priority instead is to sign a free-agent offer sheet with one of the league's 29 other teams.

All of which doesn't necessarily mean that Kessel's days in the Hub are numbered.

The Bruins, per CBA rules and guidelines, still reserve the right to match any offer sheet Kessel signs, and if they choose to match they are only prohibited from trading Kessel for the first year of his new deal.

In the bottom of my stomach I truly believe that Kessel will be a Predator. They have the prospect depth and cap space to get a deal done. The Predators need an attraction and a 21 year old 30+ goal scorer who can be a francise foward could be that man
Either way Kessel gets his contract with or without the Bruins.

If the rumours are true about heatley to the sharks, watch ottawa walk in with an offer sheet...as much as I would hate that, it'd be absolutely huge for them...
Alfredsson-Spezza-Kessel
Kovalev-Stoll-Frolov
Foligno-Fisher-Kelly/Neil

shiiiittttt say it aint so

im no sure if its accurate but i read a post in the last 15 mins sayin that this would give ottawa like 3.5 in cap room. Also from my understanding you can be slightly over it when the season starts, and then waive a few trade Smith (which they are trying to do)
I might be wrong about all of this i dont actually know how much room they have

I see them ending up with Kessel; either by offer sheet or by trade. They don't need any more younger players, mixed with some vets that have immovable contracts; so they have the room (other than cap space)

I'm almost certain Jason Smith retired last week.

How about Kessel to the Wild?

Time for a new era and this would be a big boost for them

A team can be 10% over from July 1st to and including the last day of training camp at which point they must meet the upper Cap limit.
