Veteran Limit: please expand on this?

what is the definition of veteran? if you never played in a pro league other than the AHL, are you considered a veteran.

What exactly is the limit. Does the limit apply to scratched players?

Do you have to be with the team if you are scratched?

A veteran is a player who has played in more than 260 NHL, AHL, or European League games (however only European League games played after the player is 20 years old count) prior to the season (a player can not gain veteran status during the season)

The limit is 5 veterans, but a team can also have an exemption of one player who has played more than 260 pro games, but less than 320 pro games. Veterans on conditioning stints do not count against the limit for the first 14 days of their conditioning stint.

The limit does not apply to scratched players.

thanks.

do playoff games count as part of that 260 pro games

and can a player lose non-veteran status in the middle of the season. so say they're @ 240 pro games, 20 more games into the season.
Does that mean the player will start counting against the veteran limit

No, a player cannot become a veteran in the middle of the season. That's why you often see a guy sit during the season to make sure they don't cross the threshold late in the season. They want to maintain non-veteran status for the following year.

I also don't hink playoff games count.

As a side note, goalies do not count against that 5 veteran limit. They are exempt.

Are you considered a veteran if you are a 4th year pro, irregardless of the number of games you have played ? At the very least you would have to clear waivers.

No it's strictly by number of games played.

The questions about playoff games counting (they don't) and more have been covered, but I thought I would post the link to the AHL wording in their FAQs on the AHL website:

"What is the AHL's development rule?
In the AHL, player development is a top priority. The American Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Players' Association have the following development rule in place for the 2008-09 season:

Of the 18 skaters (not counting two goaltenders) that teams may dress for a regular-season game, at least 13 must be qualified as
"development players." Of those 13, 12 must have played in 260 or fewer professional games (including AHL, NHL, IHL and European elite leagues), and one must have played in 320 or fewer professional games.

All calculations for development status are based on regular-season totals as of the start of the season."

It would appear ECHL and Central Hockey League games do not count as professional games as defined by the AHL rule book?

You are correct. And really, that makes sense. A guy that is progressing through the ranks might need to spend time in the ECHL first and then in the AHL. You wouldn't want to limit a guy that might need more time in the lower leagues by making those games count toward veteran status.

It is not all European leagues, it is the European Elite leagues of Sweden, Finland, Germany, Czech, Russian (I am not sure about the Swiss or Austrian), the KHL.

It also includes games in the old IHL, not the current one. Lower league games do not count.
