Campbell, Versteeg and a 3rd for Heatley and Kelly. It works with the cap, is good value for Heatley (IMO), and Chicago can sign another #5-6 d-man with the cap space leftover.

To Ottawa: Brian Campbell (7.14) + Andrew Ladd (1.55) + Akim Aliu

To Chicago: Dany Heatley (7.5)

Ottawa adds a little over 1 million in salary.

If Schubert still plays defense you could toss him in there to even out the salaries and it gives Chicago a bottom pairing d-man for cheap.

I would not do this deal with Campbell involved unless one of Sharp, Versteeg, Seabrook or Bolland was also involved.

That's my opinion on this. We can take Campbell back, but we need a strong piece coming back - and we're also gonna need to unload some salary their way (Chris Kelly).

Chicago management is getting very greedy. I realize the offseason dealings have been split between two GM's but still, why go after Heatley? Why? Wouldn't they rather have save cap space to somehow sign Toews, Kane, and Keith and enjoy young talent for longer and cheaper than high priced (but nevertheless talented) guys like Heatley and Hossa?

All I can say is enjoy it while it lasts Hawks fans. If it's true Bowman is pushing hard for Heatley, you'll have one amazing season to behold this season but the Hawks will be a mess when the 2010 offseason rolls around.

Chicago?

Do they have no plans to re-sign Toews and Kane?

Ladd's a better player than Versteeg.

If Chicago manages to give Campbell and get Heatley I will be amazed. I think Heatley is going to end up in SJ. It should be interesting.

The offer is now Marleau and Cheechoo for Heatley and Lee

I'd rather have Ladd than Versteeg. He's much more physical, better defensively, bigger, cheaper...

And he scored just 4 less points than Versteeg last year. 49 points (with next to no PP time), +26, 117 hits (compared to 43 for Versteeg)...

Only way Kane is included is if Volch is thrown in, but I simply do not see that happening. Murray would get pounced on for what is perceived as a bad contract and for taking on someone who has been in a very negative spotlight this summer, especially considering he is giving up the best player in the deal (who obviously has depreciated value) and one of the most popular and important players on the Sens, while Bowman would get flack for essentially swapping the younger, slightly troubled star for the older, incredibly troubled all-star, while also giving up a very high scoring d-man for a ufa d-man who only scores 10 points a year, and who's defensive game, while amongst the best in the league, doesn't quite make up for the 45+ point discrepancy in the eyes of many fans. In theory it could work very well for both parties, but I just feel like its not the type of deal that could be made.

Do not want.

But, he's the lesser of two bad contracts when compared with Campbell.

It's gotta be close though. Versteeg seems not to mind getting into traffic and making things happen even though he's not the biggest of kids. Seems to have an above-average 2-way game as well?

Am I wrong? You'd obviously know a lot more about it that I would.

The same then as it does whether or not this rumor comes through. A testament to Doug Wilson's lack of negotiating skills with agents and other teams.

They had to make that trade to get under the cap, not to get Heatley.

Good assessment, thanks. I knew Ladd was gritty, but wasn't sure exactly how gritty.

Still terrible, but they needed to clear up that much salary anyways to fill out the roster

If i was Murray i'd seriously consider a deal centered around Campbell and Sharp.

Campbell and his big cap hit + Sharp > Marleau + Cheechoo
