They have not announced any STH per season events, unlike the first two years when they held an event in late August/early September at the practice rink in Strongsville. Also, no pre-season games have been announced.

So what's the goaltending situation look like in Lake Erie?
I assume that Weiman will be the starter, and they will be between Sauer and Cann for the back-up spot, and then one goes to the ECHL?
Who has the better edge between Sauer and Cann?

Cann most likely, if he is fully healthy after the shot he took in training camp.

Holey guacamole, Steve Shields is still playing hockey?! Noooo way. I say he'll be starting for the Avs by the new year.

edit: last played 5 games for the Thrash back in '05-'06? Hell, sign him up!

Ahhh...

Nepotism!

A couple of these invites are of the proverbial 'friend of a friend' type.

Brock Bradford was a teammate of Jonesy is the BCHL. Jason Desantis went to OSU w/Tom Fritsche and T.J. (another one?) Reynolds played in Milwaukee with Haydar and Durno. I suppose that's common though in the grand scheme of things...LOL!

And where is Stoa?

LEM win!

Yeah! We're undefeated in the preseason! A few quick notes, though I was distracted talking with Front Office (Monsters) personnel...

Got to meet the coaches. Quinn seemed to be a bit of a hard ass. Not a bad thing. Said everything we wanted to hear. If the system the guys played is similar to what we saw last year, we should be MUCH improved! Lots of puck possession and playing in your face 'D'. A few breakaways but unable to capitalize on them.

Sauer was in net all game. Looked good except got beat for tying goal late (just over 2 minutes left) after a PP ended. Tired legs on the ice...

For the game it was (in no particular order Phil Paquet, Rich Rapac, Kevin Schaeffer, Brock Bradford, Randy Rowe, Justin Mercier, T.J. Reynolds, Ryan Wilson, Marc Cavosie, David Rohlfs, Mike Bartlett, Jason Desantis, Matt Clarke, Bobby Phillips, Josh Aspenlind, Matt Ford, Max Taylor, Charlie Kronschnabel, David Marshall, Ryan Stoa and Billy Sauer. Mostly fringe guys playing. I'm told Cann (the back up dressed) was nursing a bit of a sore groin. Most of these guys will be off to Charlotte (except Steve Shields, he'll be our #1, LOL!)

Mercier is a DEMON! Slick skater but needs to realize what got him through college may not work here. A little puck hoggish at times but, if you've got the wheels, why not?

Stoa looked good. Parked in front of the net a lot and was difficult to move. Earned an assist on the 1st LE goal.

Just when you thought it was over, Jonesy's former teammate, Bradford, saves the day. Top shelf with 4 seconds left...

Even though it didn't count, it was exciting.

Looking forward to the start of both seasons...

Wrong. Shields dressed as the backup and wore #31. Cann did not dress.

BTW, in case anyone cares, the home and road jerseys have been changed. The colors and styles are the same, just that the Monster logo has been moved to the chest, and the "M" logo to the left shoulder, just like the third jersey.

The Avs sent down Durno, Weiman and Peltier. I imagine Durno or Willsie will be named captain.

Oops...

I saw #31 was dressed as backup but forgot Cann is #35, not #31.

Does Sauer head to the ECHL? It has to be kind of tough to evaluate kids with no real preseason game play. Did LE have a training camp of their own? If so, anyone care to comment on the kids at this level?

Yes, but they only had one day of practices and then a scrimmage the next day. Last night was their only preseason game. I imagine if Cann isn't 100 percent healthy, Sauer will remain with the Monsters for the time being.

There is a video up at the Monsters website from the practice on Thursday, unfortunately not much other local coverage that I could find.

Yeah, not much commentary here either. Understandable but there are a couple kids at that level I am keen to follow.

Local TV...

and radio coverage here largely, to be nice, needs improvement...

Channel 19/43 (WOIO) is the only one who seems to give them a shake though you DO see them get some coverage on the Sunday 'weekend wrap' shows. I don't know what, if any, of that content makes it to the websites.

The general consensus seems to be that 'pro' sports teams deserve the coverage while minor league 'pro' sports, don't. Many still consider this even though the Cleveland City Stars won the USL2 Championship last year and the Lake Erie Crushers won the Frontier League Championship this year. They may have to reconsider that if they haven't seen the Browns or Indians play this year!

Tyler Weiman and Mike Vernace hosted a few sports segments for WOIO last year. They were pretty funny but I can't find anything on YouTube.

With some success, maybe that will change. It's all part of a process...I guess

Roster

Willsie is captain; Haydar and Fahey are the alternates.

Monsters overcame a 2-0 deficit to win their season opener 3-2 in OT.

It's called the minors. Most games are on the weekends to maximize the crowds.

If you are at the game and able can you give a status report on Stoa? Interested in how he is adapting.

TIA

I thought Stoa was the Monsters best player last night, which doesn't say a whole lot. He was the strongest on the puck and, outside of Dupuis, was the quickest LEM forward.

At times, he looked a little bit overmatched physically, especially on the cycle. Quinn seems to be trying to get the Monsters to play below the half wall, but they don't have the strength to play that kind of game.

The best defenseman was Ryan Wilson, and it's a shame that he had to miss 17 minutes sticking up for Burki after he got lit up (cleanly) at the blue line by Petiot. Wilson won the fight, but overall, played a really solid game. He was mobile, quick, and didn't get caught out of position very often.

Weiman played very well. The first goal was a really bad bounce and the second was a defensive breakdown when Davis got free in the slot. Weiman kept them in the game because they had no sustained pressure whatsoever, The Monsters had one shot and the puck was out.

For what it's worth, if you guys have injury problems, you're not getting a whole hell of a lot of help from here. Stoa's still a little weak. Dupuis/Haydar would have to go up, but I really wasn't impressed with Haydar.

A lot of laziness from the Monsters, explains all the penalties. They got outworked all night. I know there's a lot of turnover, but that's even more reason to work hard.
