Okay, I'm looking at the current NHL standings, and here's a real head-scratcher of an oddity.

Currently 20 of 30 NHL teams have more wins than regulation losses. How is this even possible? The entire Atlantic Division has a winning record, and 3 of 5 Southeast teams do. Only 2 Northeast teams, but that's still 10 of 15 Eastern Conference teams.

In the west is a similar picture.

I know the league is staggered in terms of games played, but is it really possible when every game should involve two teams and one wins and one loses for 2/3rds of the teams to have winning records? I suppose this is mostly an irregularity caused by OTL and SOL records, but it still seems odd.

EDIT: Okay, counting OTLs three more Eastern teams have losing records, so that makes 7/15 with winning records in the East, which is as expected. The thing that spawns the oddity in statistics is that the Lightning and Islanders have a large number of overtime losses.

yes, a lot of games have gone to overtime so far up to now...the Islanders actually lost the first 3 games of the season in OT, and finished the month with 9 losses, but 5 of those where in OT while they won 4 games, so they went 4-4-5, and so far this month for every regulart time loss they have an OT loss, if you were to count OT loss as just a loss they would be 8-13... they have more OT losses than anyone in the league

I wouldn't call it a winning record.

Filatov wants out of CBS...and may be heading to Russia. Florida needs to get on the phone with the Bluejackets. NOW!

He's already been loaned to a KHL team, according to the news reports.

Yeah, already gone, not sure why he'd want to come here.

Savard signed with Boston for 7 years for a cap hit of 4.2 mill a year. Pretty gigantic steal for Boston. Savard is criminally underrated around the league. If they get a top pick in the draft as well they'll be sick for a long time.

Yea, Savard is very, very underrated. Wish he became a free agent and our ownership tried to make a name for themselves by signing him.

Kane and Toews signed for 5 years and Keith signed for 13 years. Deals expected to be announced tomorrow.

Also, Noah Welch was put on waivers by Atlanta.

Darren McCarty officially calls it a career after 15 seasons as a Red Wing.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slu...v=ap&type=lgns

Him and Claude Lemieux were at the core of the bitter rivalry between the Avs and Wings in the late 90s. Doesn't seem like there's anything like that anymore...could be said to be the end of an era.

Apparently Tanguay is being placed on the 4th line tonight. Aren't you guys glad we didn't' waste $4+ million on him?

Sadly, his 17 points would still be 4th on the Panthers.

Another take on this could be that Tocchet knows what it takes to "motivate" veterans sometimes.

...Or that Toccet is a ****** coach, which is what I think and he doesn't know how to best use his players.

I'm not saying sending a guy down to the 4th line isn't a good thing to motivate him, but just in the grand scheme of things, several players in Tampa aren't performing as they could be IMO.

I got the hint. PDB has said that he hasn't been in a position to bench poor performing players because of all the injuries he's had. My guess is that once we're healthy () there will be some bruised egos.

Well he got to Koistinen so you can see he wants to do that without question. I can think of a number of players to bench, starting with Kreps.

Start a list, I dare you. Put them in order, starting with those most needing benching. Bet you get some good chat going with that.

John Tortorella's at it again with another hilarious post-game press conference as the Rangers lost 2-1 last night to the Islanders to continue the free-fall down the standings.

Thanks for sharing that, PanthersPunk. That was hilarious. Man, that guy was seething from the first second, wasn't he? Actually, I like Tortorella. He's in the Pat Burns mold. I remember one night, many years ago when the only way I could watch Leafs games was to buy one of those huge radar dishes and pick off the Canadian hockey broadcasts.

In between periods, the screen would go dark and I'd be left with the announcers chatting with themselves or listening to some technician chat. In this game the Leafs were getting hosed and the mike picked up Burns just screaming at his players.

It was hilarious! Ron MacLean and a few others were whispering "Oh my God, he's really giving it to them." Then they'd get quiet and all you could hear was Burns screaming and screaming from the room next door. It was an amazing performance. The walls shook. The lungs on that man. Impressive.

One of my favorite things is watching the Rangers spend a fortune and still lose.

Laus! Begin a funny youtube-video thread will you? That one and the Torts video were hilarious. I bet it would be super popular.

What the hell was that by Semin? Did something happen earlier in the game between those two?
