I'd rather see somebody else get it, not because he doesn't deserve it, but because Markov is better when he lets his play do the talking.

Markov is a player who knows his limits on and off the ice. I knew he wouldn't want to be captain.

IMO, Cammy will be our guy. He knows what the CH means, he seems to be a leader on and off the ice, and he should be our best player.

Imho he's got the face of a captain.

I still want Markov as our captain. It's a symbolic honor, nothing more. His play on the ice is talk enough. As Martin said, Yzerman, Lemieux and Sakic were silent in the dressing room in the '02 Olympics.

As for the talk of Gorges for captain, I'm not even sure he'll be in the starting line-up. It's highly unlikely that Martin will dress six left-shooting dmen.

Lol wtf? He's the only guy who's consistently played on the right side.

Hey somebody told me Josh Gorges used to be captain of his junior team, can anyone verify this? Maybe Gorges should be captain.

Good on him for being mature enough to decline it. Honestly, I can't imagine Markov being captain. People ragged on Koivu for not speaking French, Markov barely speaks English.

Nothing wrong with a rotating captaincy or 3 A's (or having the players vote before the season starts like Buffalo did a couple of years ago).

For some reason people in Montreal attach a weird, holistic kind of significance to the captaincy that no other fanbase does.

I'm not really surprised. I never once thought he would become captain. He'll have an 'A' but that's about it.

As for the 'C', I don't think we'll see one right away. Martin will see how things play out and maybe have one named by the end of training camp.

Best choice Markov ever made. I would much rather see him just play hockey rather then worry about facing the media every game.

I want Cammy to be our captain!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The players should vote on a captain 20 or 30 games into the season. Have a rotating system or 4 assistants until then. My two cents.

Can't wait to see who the first journalist is going to be to spin this as some kind of slap in the face to the Montreal Canadiens...how dare someone refuse the captaincy

Either way...this whole captain thing is overblown IMO. Leadership ALWAYS comes from a group of players, and the captain is usually the elected spokesperson for that group...

Good post except for the last sentence ... The C in Montreal does mean a lot because of the people who have come before you. Here is the list of Captains since 1940 who have had the C for more than 1 season ..

Toe Blake
Emile Bouchard
Maurice Richard
Jean Beliveau
Henri Richard
Yvan Cournoyer
Serge Savard
Bob Gainey
Guy Carbonneau
Vincent Damphousse
Saku Koivu

Thats not just ANY list IMO.

Agreed. I've always really liked Gionta's style. Hard worker, strong work ethic and can produce. You have to admire a guy who can become such a good player in the NHL being one of, if not THE smallest player in the league. He also plays a strong, responsible two-way game. I was extatic when the Habs picked him up this summer. I would have no problems at all with him being named captain.

To give our new guys an easier transition, I wouldn't give Gomez, Cammy or Gionta the C either. It would be too much too soon.

I've seen Markov a few times in restaurants, it's funny when you see him there he's usually either eating alone & playing on his cell phone or with a girl but they wouldn't talk and he's still just playing on his cell phone most of time.

VERY shy & introverted, would not be a good choice for captain.

I really think Lappy would make a great captain.

I see where you're coming from, and I probably should have clarified that I do understand why some people attach such a massive significance to the C - because it's been worn by some of the best in the history of the league like the Richards, Beliveau, etc. But we're no longer in that era, the captaincy has a different significance now compared to forty or fifty years ago. You don't have guys like the aforementioned who play with one team for their entire career - there's 30 teams and player turnover is at a higher rate than ever before. Not to mention the generational talents are so much fewer and farther between. That's why I don't understand it when people act like the Habs not having a captain will be some kind of tragedy or why they're so desperate to find the most qualified candidate and annoint him the C as soon as possible. It may have been unthinkable in the days of the Richards and Beliveaus of the Habs' teams but those days are long gone.

Gionta would be a solid choice. Although, he seems to be eerily similar to Koivu as a hard-working, quiet guy. Maybe at this stage of their developement, the Habs needs something else. Cammi is definitly more outgoing(yet less of a big mouth as Gomez).

I think we're going to follow the Canucks lead and Price will be getting the "C"
