No one except Markov is worthy to be the captain and he turned it down (which is fine by me, as long as he keeps being this superstar).

I say no captain, just alternate it until a true leader emerges from the group.

the captain is the face of the franchise - are we ready to have gionta as the face of the franchise? imo it should be gomez or cammaleri, with gorges and hammer as A's, maybe Mara with an A too.

I dont see problem with that - if you count out Markov, who else is left from the team we had couple years ago? More than half of our team core just changed and the other half is still young and inexperienced. Hamrlik might be a choise, but I doubt his in our long term plans once hes contract is up.

Me personally I think Gomez should be Habs next Captain. Hes our highest paid player, which IMO should come with certain responsibility towards his teammates - and you really can have him on the ice in every situation.

Markov is smart to turn it down. Being a captain of the Habs is not a position of prestige anymore as it was years ago when most of the media actually respected the players regardless of their background and showed some class. Rather, it means being a target, a means to an end to satisfy an agenda, and someone to blame for whatever ails the team. He saw what happened to Koivu. He knows that no matter how well he plays, he will be judged for his ability to speak French as long as some identify the team as a political representation of a linguistic group that perceives itself as threatened. Being Russian, it would be a no-win situation for him. Instead, he can concentrate on hockey which is what he does best and leave media relations to others.

I think that's only going to compound the problem. We already know that as soon as he falters people are going to start complaining about his contract. The complaints are going to be ten times louder if he has the C as well. Not to mention he's already got enough pressure trying to rebound from a lousy year in New York.

Besides, we didn't give him the contract, we just traded for it (for whatever it's worth).

That is usually the case, but not always.

Ovechkin is the face of the Capitals and isn't their captain.
Lecavalier remained the face of the Lightning even after being stripped of captaincy (he's now captain again).
Thornton is the face of the Sharks and isn't their captain.
Staal is the face of the Hurricanes and isn't their captain.

And you've got a few other guys who are arguably the face of their franchise and aren't captain either.

It's just that the captain is usually a team's best player and that player is, usually, the face of the franchise.

The only player on this team who could realistically end up being the face of the franchise is Price (or Markov I guess, but he doesn't want to be captain). Unlike the Canucks, we're never going to choose a goalie as captain. No matter who the captain is, he won't be the face of the franchise.

+1

Or just rotate the A's for the first few months.

I think Markov has the right to say no, he has alot of things against him, and hes playing his best hockey now, I say we keep him as is and don't mess with a good thing. I'm glad he said he doesn't want it.

I agree 100%, especially with this part: "Being a captain of the Habs is not a position of prestige anymore as it was years ago when most of the media actually respected the players regardless of their background and showed some class. Rather, it means being a target, a means to an end to satisfy an agenda, and someone to blame for whatever ails the team."

Gomez would be a bad choice. 7M C who might never live up to his contract PLUS captain of the Habs? Asking way too much of a normal human being. Gionta would be a slightly better choice...

I'd really like for a grinder-type to be the captain for once, then people can't whine that he didn't score 100 goals on any given year...

You can keep saying it all you like, but BG said this week in an interview that HE will be the major decider in who is the Habs next captain.

I would not be surprised if a rotating group is used to start the season. At this point I am less worried about who will be captain then how the team will gel.

Markov may be shy, quiet, and hard to understand, but he's always given me the impression that he's a very smart guy. The few things he ever says always seem to be well thought out.

I think he made the right decision.

Yup, confirmed by Dace Stubbs. Who makes up this stuff really?

Markov: I've not been asked about captaincy, didn't say one way or another if he'd take it if asked
