I really wonder how the media always comes up with BS rumors..
After being wrong pretty much 99% of the time, don't they abandon their ''great sources''??

I like that suggestion.

We forget that Pierre Turgeon was captain as well. Who can forget him uncomfortably holding the torch above his head at the closing of the Forum/openning of the new rink.

That said, the management should pick the captain. Players pick the most popular player, and that just causes problems between players. It did betwen Richard and Geffrion, Carbo and Chelios, and Koivu and Corson. Who needs that?

I say wait to see who emerges.

Picking the Captain should be the coaches job.

Using that logic you could also argue that it could create tension between the coaching staff and a player or group of players.

Also, if a player is voted in by fellow players he might take the role more seriously and add accountability to the job. I give players a lot more credit than to just pick a popular player. It's not high school.

Picking the captain should be Don Lever's job.

I'm happy with his decision. I would rather him just concentrate on playing hockey and not have the pressures of being captain of the Habs. I think he'll be more productive being as low key as possible.

Wouldn't surprise me if this is one of those things that got out and wasn't supposed to. If you think about it refusing captaincy is a pretty big deal. Not a decision you take lightly. It's also not something that you'd want the media to know if you were Markov.

Wouldn't surprise me if the original report were true in this case.

Martin says he and Gainey will pick a captain at the end of camp. Don't know if I like that, its kinda early.

Gorges is arguably better than Mara, who while skilled has settled in a more safe bottom-pairing style of game. Mara can still be a top 4 but so can Gorges.

Gorges is just so much better than O'Byrne, so it makes little sense to sit him for the guy who slots no. 7 on our depth chart. Gorges has potential to improve even still. So what if we don't have a right shot on our D? Our PP is structured around Markov feeding the left-handed trigger D, anyways.
Let's say you're right on your analysis (and I strongly disagree with it). Still, who are you going to bench? You cannot have 6 dmen who shoot from the same side. Never gonna happen.

Markov, Hamrlik, Spacek and Mara are definitely locks (Mara's had a season above 40 points with the dismal Coyotes). That leaves you Gill, O'Byrne and Gorges fighting it out for the last two spots. Gill and O'Byrne are taller and stronger. O'Byrne is right handed and Gill has Stanley Cup experience as well as a brand new contract.

Nothing against the guy (similar to my thoughts on the departed UFAs) but it looks like he's going to get much less ice time than last year.

After reading thread I was confused! I hadn't realized that Gionta dominated the western hockey league while captaining Kelowna prior to doing the same at Boston College, so he should get the nod.

It's a good thing Markov knows his limit by not taking the C. Markov is more of a guy that leads by example, the less he talk the more he seems happy. He want this team to win, of course but the A is enough for him. Let's give the C to a guy with leadership skills who knows how to talk to his teammates.

Considering Mara himself said he focused more on offensive in Phoenix and his offensive game has gone down hill since then, you can't rely on that.

Someone said Gorges was the only one who played regularly on the right side, so he's a lock.

Gill is new and can only play his way out of the lineup, he won't start there. Chances are, he won't play himself out and the only way O'bryne gets in is if there's an injury. By all accounts Subban is sounding impressive, so O'bryne might be moved back some in the depth chart.

Ron Fournier on CKAC just said that Markov was never offered the C. He phoned that particular Gazette journalist and he said he screwed up and the "news" was not verified enough. The Habs management just talked to their vets about it, just to know if they would be interested, how did they view leadership, etc...just to get their feet wet. Nothing official.

Markov denied being offered the captaincy, so why are people making a huge deal out of this?

We don't know if he will or won't be offered the captainy, and we also don't know if we will or won't accept the captaincy.

Case closed.

The media that follows the team are more insane than the fans....it was offered, not it wasn't, what a crew... The next headline, Markov has cramps, oh, wait, no....
