For once, he'll be given a shot to be the second-line pivot....and actually stay in that role. He was never given much of a chance in Ottawa.....sure, he played with Heatley/Spezza duo here and there, and sometimes on the second line, but usually he was stuck on the 3rd line.

Meh $3.375 for a 2nd line centre who will likely get 50-60pts next year, plays on the PK and is very good defensively seems fine to me. Bolland should come close to earning his money next year and he'll be underpaid for the final 3 years of his contract.

Since when is a defensively responsible second-line center considered a grinder?

That's pretty much the Columbus reaction to this.

He's played 5 full seasons, and only 1 of them he actually played like a 2nd line offensive player. Of course, He had 13 points in 17 games with you guys, but yea.... , if actually gets 60 + plus points per year, yea then good deal....

If he puts up at least 60 points I will call this a good deal. You have to give him a chance with Columbus before we just throw this in the bad deal pile. 13 points in 17 games is a good pace from last year.

Take a look at how many times he played as a center with second-line talent in those seasons. You might find an interesting correlation.

This chain of reasoning keeps coming up over and over, and I just continue to find it uproariously funny:

RJ Umberger played as a center for quite some time, but is better at wing. We're playing him at wing. Nonetheless, his play as a center clearly shows that he's overpaid and he sucks.

Antoine Vermette played as a wing for quite some time, but is better at center. We're playing him at center. Nonetheless, his play as a wing clearly shows that he's overpaid and he sucks.

Obvious Conclusion: The Jackets' second line sucks. Clearly it's all Nash and Mason, bay-bee.

It's just kind of amusing to watch.

Agreed - he's been quite impressive this offseason. Loved their draft and he's worked hard at locking key players in and bringing stability to the franchise.

So glad he isn't the Oilers GM.

He's a solid player. He played great with Umberger - amazing chemistry. Good signing. He's clearly a valuable piece of this organization moving forward and they look at him as a top 6 guy. He played very well after the trade. I think they expect him to only get better - they have no reason not to think that.

Talk about overpayment.

It's a good signing. People whining about this contract clearly think it's 1995 and 3.7 million is the going rate for a superstar.

No, I think people "whining" about the contract are more pragmatic, and see $3.75 million a year as an overpayment for a guy that's been in the league 5 years, and has exceeded 50 points once.

Most of the comparisons given in this thread are for RFA's, this is his first contract for his UFA years.

Whatever Vermette has been able to do in Ottawa had been while playing out of his natural postion, on the wing rather than center; even so he brings more than offensive production as he is a very good PK'er and face off man and has speed to burn.

He has had 20 goals every year but last year which was a disaster for the Sens offensive producit all round.

I think the Jackets will be very happy with him but I hope he returns to the Sens one day.

A bit steep for the length I thought. When I saw 5 years I expected something in the 2.5 to 3M range so a bit expensive. But its not a bad deal either.

50 pts playing a role that didn't promote scoring, no? He's being looked upon to put points on the board for the Blue Jackets. Look what happened to Justin Williams and Patrick Sharp when they were traded from Phila and put in more expansive roles as opposed to their original checking roles Hitch used them for.

Vermette will progress and earn his money.

That is one risky contract for a 40 point per year center. I see Vermette as the ultimate 3rd line center, but a bit below the standards of your average 2nd line center. But hey, if the Jackets are happy then i'm happy for them. I just wouldn't bank on production like he exhibited in his 17 games for them over the course of a full season.
