Habs sign Philippe Lefebvre

http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/282417.html

Was passed over in the draft this past June. Was invited to the Habs development and rookie camp, as his former coach with the Volts (Guy Boucher) is now the Habs AHL head coach in Hamilton.

I guess this will keep certain media types in Montreal from frothing at the mouth, at least for a little while.

Please tell me... He's only 18 yo. He would have been eligible for the next draft as well as a 19 yo. Are you allowed to sign any 18 yo players before the start of the season?

Thanks in advance.

The Quebec media makes me laugh. A mixture on francophone nationalism and just downright stupidity.

There's a period when teams can sign undrafted rookies if they still have draft eligibility. I believe the period ends when training camp ends.

I believe Dallas is on the verge of doing the same with Hubert Labrie.

Any reason why not? Not a high profile Francophone and therefore not good enough, I guess?

Yes, you can sign any undrafted 18 year old once the draft is over and up until some point in sept. (forget the exact date)

The Habs did this last year with Robert Mayer and before that with Olivier Michaud. So far it hasn't worked out too well.

another possibility: "if he was good enough to sign, he was good enough to be drafted in front of the hometown crowd"

Well let's wait all little bit before blaming Mayer. We only signed him one year ago. He might even be our best prospect at that position,

Michaud was an average 4/5th string goaltender. Anyway it's not like you should have big expectations on an undrafted players.

What's funny is that Lefevbre is the first Q player eligible for the 2009 draft to get signed to a contract. I think that Mayer was also in the same situation last year.

There is also the fact that the Habs lost the Lalonde-McNicoll, Riendeau and Paré derbys. (see how stupid it is) So the media will probably say that they didn't sign Lefevbre and Masse (earlier this summer) for their talent but only to hide their mistakes...
