It was worth a shot but ...

The Syracuse Bulldogs are proud to select with their first selection, and the third overall selection in the draft.

RW - Gordie Howe

There was only one right thing to do, and that was it.

I learned my lesson from the last ATD, but I'd like to very lightly kick tires. I might have interest in dropping from 7 to the 15-17 range. Something like the trade from ATD 9 (9th and 248th for 19th and 110th) would appeal to me.

I would make Gretzky the #1 pick without hesitation should I ever own it, and it's not because I never saw Bobby Orr in his prime.

Trade to announce(and the first one of this ATD, I believe)

To Kimberley: 38th overall, 155th overall, 216th overall

To NYGB: 58th overall, 122nd overall, 186th overall

I confirm it, just waiting for Mr.Bugg to now.

Why are these fans mobbing this guy wearing #66?

Is it his 5 FAST, and 4 SAST?
His 2 Conn Smythes, 3 Harts, 4 Pearsons, 6 Art Ross, a Calder, and why the hell not, a Masterton?
his 9 top-10s in goals, 3 of which led the league, 9 top-10s in assists, 3 of which led the league, and 10 top-10s in points, 6 of which led the league?
His 1723 career points, good for 9th of all time?
The fact that he would have been higher on that list if not for some injuries and a brief retirement, as evidenced by his 1.88 PPG, good for 2nd of all time?

The first member of the Hamilton Bettmans is none other than Mario Lemieux!

Inglewood selects a player regarded by many as the greatest defensive defender of all time (and one of the best offensively as well). Winner of 7 Norris Trophies, a 10-time first-team Allstar, 6 time Stanley Cup Champion, and one of the Original Kings of Comedy:

Steve "Doug" Harvey

Because he played in a high scoring era? That can be left for roster debates and playoff series. There's nothing wrong with calling attention to a cartoonishly high PPG in a bio. Besides, there have been 3 other players picked at this point, I have nothing to position Lemieux as other than a good franchise player in this draft.

I'd go with Orr at 1 because he does more, at top speed, than anyone else in the draft, and there is a shortage at defence. And I'd go with Howe at No. 2 because I feel that everything he brings to the table gives him the edge over Wayne, even though Wayne is better offensively.

But I don't fault anyone who would go with Gretz at No. 1.

haha, sorry, I didn't actually mean to offend. What I was pointing out was the "he would have been much higher..." line. VanIslander is always making sure nobody says things like that because the ATD is about what a player did, not what they could have done. I was just making a joke, because you just happened to be the first person to say something involving a woulda/coulda/shoulda. I agree with you, and would have picked the same guy; I was just being a **** disturber!

YOU MISUNDERSTOOD.

Reflecting on what a player could have done if wasn't for injuries has always been a part of the ATD and I've always encouraged such discussions. Same as other historical counterfactual conditions: what if a player had been on a great team instead of a bad team? what if a player had been in this league instead of that league? Such reflections are valid and add value to a player's career. But they come with QUESTION MARKS. The number and strength of such question marks is the issue. A great team can handle one or two question marks, and ought to imo. But a team of injured amateur second-tier league killed in the war superstars is just way way too many question marks!

It's only FUTURE projections that I constantly and emphatically object to, what a player will/should/might do from today onward. This is not a projection prospect draft. We assume as we always have that a player's career ends today and is being considered against players from every era, looked at from fifty to a hundred years in the future, looking backward on the player's career and talent and peak and experiences and championships, etc.

My bad. Just trying to stir the pot a little. Didn't mean to offend anyone or put words in anyone's mouth. Comment retracted.
