Recchi resigned with Boston. In hindsight, trading him was probably a mistake, but I can't completely blame Lawton for doing so.

On March 23, 1999, the day of the trade deadline, Detroit (controversially) traded Anders Eriksson, and two first round picks to Chicago for the 37 year old Chris Chelios.

Chelios went on to play about a decade for Detroit, being an important part of their 2002 Stanley Cup win, although by Detroit's 2008 cup win, he was more or less just along for the ride.

Eriksson, and the players who were drafted with those picks, Adam Munroe and Steve McCarty, didn't turn into regular NHLers. A very risky move, but one that's turned out to be a good one on Holland's part. Or at least reflect poorly on Chicago's drafting at the time.

Chelly has been around so long, that people discussing future first ballot hall of famers sometimes don't always consider him to be one, having grown to only really know his above-average to 'whatever is going on now', level of play.

There's still time for Lashoff and Karsums to make their mark in the NHL, but I can't help but think that it might turn out to be a poor man's Chelios deal.

Boston also got a 2nd rounder out of this too.

That's the key. Lawton traded the two most valuable pieces out of a four part trade. The fact that both parts we received were on waivers a few months later doesn't help either.

I thought this would be a fun thing to do. I acted as if two teams had swapped their entire rosters (in this case CBJ and NYI).

Here's what I figured they would end up looking like.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
Bailey-Nielson-Comeau
Sim-Schremp-Hunter
Martin-Konopka-Parenteau

Streit-Wisnewski
MacDonald-Eaton
Hillen-Martinek
Jurcina

Roloson
DiPietro

New York Islanders
Umberger-Vermette-Nash
Huselius-Brassard-Voracek
Moreau-Pahlsson-Clark
Dorsett-Blunden-Boll

Tyutin-Hedja
Klesla-Methot
Russel-Commodore
Strahlman

Mason
Garon

Asham signs in Pittsburgh for 1 year 700k. Sounds like he wanted to stay close to Philly. Can't imagine a team like Vancouver or us wouldn't have beat it.

Yeah he wanted to stay as close to Philly as possible, 700k is a nice deal for the Pens.

Didn't want to create an extra topic for this: NHL.com's 30 in 30 - Tampa Bay Lightning: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=5...id=DL|NHL|home

The following part in particular is a real treat.
Quote:
Tanguay was brought in to provide secondary scoring but produced just 10 goals -- one over the final 25 games -- and 37 points in 80 contests with the Lightning. He blamed his disappointing showing on the fact he spent little time with top forwards Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis.
Seriously, Tangz?

16.16% EV 11 HALPERN,JEFF - 4 LECAVALIER,VINCENT - 13 TANGUAY,ALEX
8.78% EV 9 DOWNIE,STEVE - 4 LECAVALIER,VINCENT - 13 TANGUAY,ALEX

6.53% EV 4 LECAVALIER,VINCENT - 13 TANGUAY,ALEX - 19 VEILLEUX,STEPHANE

TSN is reporting Paul Kariya is going to miss the upcoming season with post-concussion syndrome.

By the end of the first month of the season, he'll be 36.

He's done IMO.

NHL fines the Devils 3 million and takes away their 3rd in 2011 and one first round pick in the next 4 years, the Devils choose.

Budget restraints stopped Florida from giving Gudbranson the bonuses he was after. He made the team, but is now headed back to the OHL

Imagine that. You make the team but get sent down because the team that drafted you can't pay you.

That must feel lovely to him.

The Kitties are definitely playing hardball on this one. The hangup was over bonuses, i.e, money that counts on the cap, but might not actually be earned.

That was a chance they were unwilling to take.

How are they ever going to be able to afford him if they won't agree to the concept of paying money for measurable achievement?

What I dont get is they sent him down because they couldnt afford (or didnt want) to pay for his bonuses. Yet the next day they make a trade to add an extra 700K to their payroll on a guy that is borderline useless.

Something isnt right.

He should prove his point, don't sign and re-enter in 2 years.

EDIT: Pittsburgh has the same 8 ft boards as us, makes watching on TV better also.
