Harrah's Operating Company, which owns 38 casinos and two thoroughbred race tracks, is the new owner of Thistledown Racetrack.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court of Delaware approved Harrah's $89.5 million bid for the North Randall thoroughbred racing facility. It ended 40 rounds of bidding on Monday that began with a so-called stalking-horse bid of $22.3 million by Penn National, bidding as Cleveland Gaming Ventures LLC, and included bids from a subsidiary of Pinnacle Entertainment.

Harrah's will pay $42 million in cash when it closes the deal, and another $47.5 million in contingency payments.

Thistledown is one of two horse racing tracks among the 11 owned by the bankrupt Magna Entertainment Corporation that have now been sold. The court on Tuesday also approved the sale of Remington Park in Oklahoma to Global Gaming Solutions RP LLC, a subsidiary of the tribal Chickasaw Nation, for $80.25 million. Magna bought Remington Park and Thistledown in 1999, paying $9.35 million for each track.

Quote:
Two days after Thanksgiving, historic Hialeah Park is planning to again come alive, offering three words a horse-racing fan can be thankful for:

``And they're off!''

After more than eight years of hibernation and decay, Hialeah Park has selected Nov. 28 as the first day of live racing under its new quarter-horse racing permit. Poker games are also expected to be offered at Hialeah, with the beeps and flashes of slot machines arriving a year or so later.

Horses will run at Hialeah for 40 days, concluding on Feb. 2. State regulators must still sign off on the racing dates, but that approval is likely, as it hinges on Hialeah merely demonstrating that its facility meets basic public safety standards.

State lawmakers this year paved the way for Hialeah's rebirth by allowing the track to install slots after holding races for two calendar years. Hialeah is knocking out that requirement all at once -- holding one 20-day race season in November and December, and another season in January and February.

Hialeah's legal right to slots is linked to the ongoing gambling compact negotiations between the Seminole Tribe and the state of Florida, but track owner John Brunetti is confident that even if those talks collapse, lawmakers won't rescind the Hialeah Park slots provision that was included in the compact bill.

The full restoration of Hialeah Park -- a national Historic Landmark -- could take years and $100 million or more. For now, Brunetti is focused on the essential repairs needed to host live racing in November. There's air conditioning and plumbing work to be done, handicapped-access upgrades needed, temporary stables to be built.

``A lot of hard work and a lot of overtime,'' Brunetti said. ``But we're doing our best.''

$1300 exacta at Suffolk -- I think it was the almighty 10-12 combo.

2000 Breeders Cup sprint winner Kona Gold euthanized at only age 15.

14 wins in 30 starts in a terrific career. Interesting video.

Also, Victory Gallop's sire Crytoclearance (Fappiano) dies at age 25.
A very nice horse, who competed in possibly the most contentious group of 3 yr olds in memory, was a superior wet track horse from my recollection of him.

Fappiano sired Unbridled, too and on that note Summer Squall was euthanized, as well. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...all-euthanized

Those kinds of exactas usually pay well unless the field is cut in half. To have two horses starting from that far out finish, obviously not unheard of or rare, but all things considered, it's not many people who hit that.

Zenyatta may race early next year. Still not going to do what everyone wants. I think Z and Rachel should meet in next year's Apple Blossom at Oaklawn. Dirt race that Rachel would go to, and Zenyatta not only beat Ginger Punch, she dominated her. Problem is that it's Arkansas and not New York or SoCal.

Summer Squall, as true a wet track horse as was ever created.

Interesting how Fappiano went on to sire the classic distance horse Unbridled, as Fappiano is out of the superior sire, Mr. Prospector, who was generally a sprinter and middle distance performer.

Summer Squall...that of PA Derby Fame.

BTW...do either of you guys have a list or a chart or something of proposed fraction times? Been kind of trying to pay closer attention to that, and obviously it depends on pace and distance. Just interesting to keep track of from race to race.

What's the old saying that time is only important in jail.

I can't speak for tracks outside of NY, but I can say when I followed it closely that the track variance changes almost daily.
In other words, the same horse would run a different number from one day than the next with the same effort.

The first thing I used to do entering the track was look at the track depth chart.

You can always clearly see when the rail had been "scraped", which meant inside speed.

Better to follow individual horses, trips, and trainers.

Good move so far by Philly Park moving the date of the Cotillion to 5 weeks before the BC. We drew a field of 6

ESPN has also added dates. Next weekend they'll show a few races from Keeneland next Saturday (10/10) AND Sunday (10/11). Also Oak Tree races next Saturday, and Woodbine on 10/17. 2nd year in a row they're showing up in Toronto.

Also the BC Juvi Turf, Turf Sprint, and Dirt Mile will be on ABC.

Summer Bird Wins Jockey Club Gold Cup

Summer Bird continues his bid for horse of the year while showing another dimension in the slop at Belmont.

Another brilliant ride by Desormeaux as he sensed a slow pace and put Summer Bird on Quality Road's flank near the lead.

The two fought it out to the wire.

This unimpressive looking colt by Birdstone is setting himself up nicely for his season finale at Santa Anita Nov 7th.

I guess he'd have a shot, but everyone's talked Rachel up so much all year. She whooped Summer Bird, and beat a legit G1 field and horse in Macho Again as well. With as much publicity as Rachel's gotten, I don't see them knocking her down, unless maybe Zenyatta pulls off the BC Classic. But Rachel's been running the "no one's done what she has done" route. She's the one everyone's been waiting for since Ruffian.

True.
I forgot about the Haskell.

Ed Fountaine had commentary in today's NY Post. Had the lead, passed in mid-stretch. Had blinkers on, is that new?

Two Grade 1 Wins For Dutrow

The huge gelded son of Roman Ruler (Fusaichi Pegasus) Homeboykris took the Gr 1 Champagne for Dutrow.
He was ridden by Prado.
Keep an eye out for 3rd place Aspire (Tale Of The Cat) who may've been best.

Shortly after that, Dutrow's Court Vision won the Gr 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keenland.
He was ridden by Albarado.

The course was soft, a condition that most certainly won't be prevalent at Santa Anita is a couple of weeks.......where Magical Fantasy won her 3rd straight Gr 1 today taking the Yellow Ribbon.

That course is very hard and won't be favored by most of the Europeans.
