I don't think Kessel will be the captain of the Leafs. He can definitely be our franchise forward, but he's not as much of a complete player or character guy, and that's what we need to lead our club. He might get an A some time down the road on that basis of being one of our best players, if not the best.

So Luke Schenn should have a sense of entitlement?

Let's stop giving freebee's to Luke and make him earn it like the rest of the players.

I think it's hilarious that the Boston fans laugh at Phil ever being a captain. Sour Grapes?

Yes, Phil is very shy and never raises his voice, is reserved...whatever you want to call it. He may not be "Captain" material, but he is "Leadership" material. He will do his talking by hitting the back of the net.

Enough said.

Truthfully, if you've ever seen kessel's actions on the ice one wouldn't have asked the question.

My mind simply can't believe somebody actually thinks Kessel could ever wear the C, on any team. Nothing against him, he's just not that type of player and doesn't have to be.

In the coming years i see Schenn being the Captain, and Beauchemin and Komisarek will be assistants for at least the short term.

I don't even think Kessel will get an A let alone a C.

I really don't like the idea of giving Schenn the C now. I find it odd to have a teenager be captain but on one hand Toews has done a good job in Chicago.

Honestly rotating A's this year and give Schenn one of them.

Next year give him the C when he's had 2 full seasons under his belt and is a technicly a veteran.

Schenn is still the long term option and leading candidate to wear the "C", but short term I can see Beachemin or Komisarek being very solid captain material.

I wonder though if Wilson and co. would name a player captain knowing that Schenn is the captain in waiting givin the history of the Leafs.

My guess would be Komisarek as well. He's experienced, well-spoken, intelligent, tough, talented, and has great character. He is exactly what we hope Schenn will eventually be or surpass someday.

When Mike's contract is up in four years, then I could POSSIBLY see Schenn getting the C (he'll still be only 23 years old by then). But all this talk about Schenn overtaking his more veteran teamates for the captaincy right now is ridiculous, and if it happened would lead me to believe that the appointment of the letter means very little, since it would seem not based so much on merit but on optics. People seriously need to relax a bit on this front. HE'S 20 YEARS OLD! For goodness sakes. He may get it some day but what's the rush?

(Note: I'm not trying to insult Schenn here, just saying we should allow him time to earn the C and grow into the role. I remember when the Islanders named a 21 year old Brian McCabe their captain. It seems good in theory to name your best young player the team Captain but in practice results may vary.)

with all due respect.you pin a "C" on Kessel and flush this deal down the toilet.
He's just not that kind of kid. He doesn't want to be the guy.

Not in a Captain kind of way anyway.

This isn't sour grapes...I wish the kid well..........

I think most of the leaf fans here agree. I think that whole "He's a shy loner" stuff was blow out of proportion but where there's smoke there's fire. I don't want a quiet guy to wear the C, I don't want a soft spoken individual to be the one to rally the troops. I want that guy who lays it all out on and off the ice to wear the C and so far that looks like Schenn.

Schenn by a mile.

A key to Kessel's sucess up there will be a strong support cast. Guys other than him to meet the press. Guys other than him to stick up for teamates. Guys other than him to lead by example in practice and workouts. But if he's corrected, critiqued or criticized he'll not take it as constructive.

He's a sniper. No question. With moves that will bring you all out of your seats.

Komisarek yes.
Beauchemin an 'A'.
Would also be fine with Hagman wearing an 'A'. Kaberle, Stajan... ehhh... maybe.
Don't think Schenn is ready for a letter just yet. If he can build on last season's success, then next year he deserves one.

Can't imagine anyone else on this team doing it.

Kessel has spectacular talent but don't confuse that for one second with leadership; the Leafs sound like they have many, many more players (especially on defense) who would serve that position much better.

Kessel is not Bure, and it will be interesting to see how he does without elite pivots (although who knows, maybe the Leafs have a Krejci on their hands and when the Thrill returns in November or whenever it will be a match made in hockey heaven); he is however, a spectacular, entertaining player. He'll score 350 goals the next 10 years if healthy and with a good center. I'd take that any day.

If I was the Leafs GM I would obviously want to win every game, but I'd be looking to shake out of 2009-10 of my current pool of ready? close? players a couple of legit top six. Burke should keep an eye on the Savard situation and hope Boston with all their other young guys coming up for contracts, and Bergeron's return to previous level, that Savard hits the market.

Savard has never been the greatest skater, but he has hockey sense up the wazoo, is a great passer, and should be this same player for another 3 years easy. If I am Burke, I reunite him with Kessel, hope Kadri is ready, get a couple of the young Leafs to perform at worthy top 6 performance, build a bottom two lines of elite grinders/tough sobs; already got a solid, tough D; hope the Monster is just that at stopping pucks, and enjoy the ride.

Hope not. I hate when a team doesn't have a captain.

Komisarek or Beachemin will emerge as a Captain this year. Dark horse is Matt Stajan.
