Where does our D Corps Stack up now?

Just talking about this with a friend of mine who happens to be a habs fan with a little bit of resentment for us stealing komi away from them.
He says that we don't even have a top 10 D. Now i am not saying we have one of the best d corps but certainly we have to be in the top 10 don't we?

Top 5 D Corps

1. Philly - As much as i hate to admit it their d looks scary.
2. Calgary - One of the best core groups with Dion and now Jaybo
3. Detroit - How do they get left off the list? maybe when a certain someone retires
4. Chicago - How can you not love what they have done there... even with campbell there like a rock around their neck.
5. Nashville - Weber, Suter, Hamhuis Oh My!!

With that top 5 almost set in stone with maybe the exception of nashville i think it is very hard to believe that we don't have a good enough corps to be included in the next 5 spots.

Yes we did get rid of Pavel and Anton but i think the guys we brought in IE: Komi, FB and GE more then made up for it.
Add in Luke having a full year of NHL exp now and throw in the amazing mustached wonder White, Finger, MVR, Frogren and lets not forget one of the best OD Men in the game and one of the highest scoring d men in the cap era... Kabs
Who i think is actually going to be protected this year and able to get back to his game...damn we have a pretty good bunch don't you think?

I think, on paper, the Leaf's defense is 3rd on that list behind Philly and Calgary......It will be interesting though on how they perform

I think if they can somehow get a healthy Mike Van Ryn on the bottom pairing, the defense becomes VERY good and very balanced.

Kaberle-Komisarek
Beauch - Schenn
Exelby - Van Ryn

You really think we are better on paper then any of those 3 other teams? I don't know if i could say that. Those are some pretty deep and solid teams there.

There may be teams with stronger top 3s but I can't think of many (maybe none) stronger 4-7. It depends how much stock you put in the overall D and who actually stays.

This seems like dejavu. We're always discussing how good our defence is and then the regular season starts and it becomes very apparent that they are actually quite horrible instead.

The difference is this year our defence is good because of depth, not because of top end talent.

I don't think any other team has guys like White and Van Ryn either on their bottom pairing or sitting on the bench.

If Schenn really emerges this season we have a top 5 d core. right now, I would say easily top 10

MVR was awesome in the few games he played..too bad..if he plays near a full season...plus White is great for a third pairing...

Calgary: Yes they have Dion and Jay Bo but Jay Bo ain't exactly a tough guy..Regher..then who?

Philli: Pronger, Coburn, Timmonen, Parent...not bad at all.

Detroit: Lidstrom and Rafalski...then to a very lesser extent Kronwall..Ericisson? c'mon.

Nashville: Good top 3.

Chicago: Yup, not bad..although let's see what happens after this season when Toews, Kane and Barker and more are all FAs...I suspect BArker is gone..

I like the Leafs strength, size, age, grit and skill from 1-6...even 7 or 8.

No, GA has to do with team D, not just your D-core (e.g. forwards not back-checking, etc.).

I didn't know you had to be a tough guy to be good.

You have to be tough (not necessarily in a goon way) to play affective D in the NHL (clearing out in front of the net, checking, etc.)....................... Jaybo sometimes plays like he's softer than cotton.

1-7 ours is the best.

Pronger's best years are past him.Other than Calgary no one has our depth. The fact Van Ryn can't even make the team says it all.Detroit's defense is in decline with Lidstrom now older than the empire state building. With guys like Van Ryn,White and Frogren fighting for their lives,no one can match our depth.

The depth is incredible, but the quality still isn't top of the league.

IMO, Kaberle offensive production will determine how great this Defense will be.

- Detroit: are you joking that Kronwall and Ericsson are to a "very lesser extent"? Either could easily play in our top 4.

- Nashville's top 3 is extraordinary, not good in my opinion (and check their pipeline of D prospects ... stunning)

- Chicago not bad?? lol you are hilarious ... a top 3 barker seabrook keith is the envy of the entire league

You said it perfectly. Kaberle will be the catalyst of our defensive corp. It's up to Komisarek to provide room for Kaberle to play, and Beauchemin and Schenn to provide the lockdown pairing to give Kaberle a breather.

Throw Vancouver in there. From top to bottom they might have the most balanced 6 man unit-

Bieska
Edler
Mitchell
Schnieder
Salo
Ehrhoff

Ericsson has played 49 NHL games in his ENTIRE career. What makes him "easily" better than Beauchemin, Komi, or Schenn. The fact that he's never even played more than 19 minutes per game?

Bad goaltending exposes bad defences. If the goalies play well, they will be a much better d, as in more confidents, and different positioning in not feeling they need tyo prevent any shot.

They need to get over the injury bug to be a top defence.
