But down there we have to pay his entire salary. Better to get rid of him and save 1.3 on the cap, right?
And more important, it would be better for Jones to remain in the NHL of course.
Don't be so mean to the poor guy.
Yes we pay his salary but it doesn't count against the cap. He's just a highly paid AHL player. AHL players don't count against us.
If we placed him on re-entry and he were claimed, then we'd be on the hook for the 1.3ish million.
We save his ENTIRE cap hit by sticking him in the minors. It's unfortunate for Ed Snider b/c he's paying 3 million to a guy who isn't contributing to the Flyers, but it REALLY improves the Flyers cap situation.
Just to clarify, if he's waived but not claimed, will the cap hit go away?
If he clears waivers, he still may not be assigned to the AHL; technically he can be left on the big club if he clears waivers. As long as he's with the Phantoms, there's no cap hit for the Flyers.

The Flyers are only on the hook if he's claimed on re-entry waivers. Anyone who claims him during the initial waiving is responsible for the $3M salary and the $2.75M cap hit.

Only if he is placed on re-entry waivers and he were claimed.
So a scenario.
Flyers waive Jones.
If he is claimed...he goes to that team, and they assume his entire salary and cap hit.
If he is not claimed the Flyers can opt to send him to the minors (which they will do).
In the minors, the Flyers pay him his 3 million salary for this year...but NOTHING counts against the cap. Again...NOTHING. AHL players don't count against the cap.
If we wanted to ever bring him BACK up from the AHL...he would need to clear waivers AGAIN, on the way up. It's called re-entry waivers.
At this point teams can claim him again if they want. If someone claims him at THIS point...the claiming team would pay half of his salary and the Flyers would pay half of his salary. The Flyers would then have a CAP HIT of half of his salary.
By waiving him/sticking him in the minors we save his ENTIRE cap hit. By placing him on re-entry waivers we risk taking on half of his cap hit.

ok good deal. i knew the deal with the re-entry waivers but wasn't sure if it happened on the way down too. i'd rather see him traded maybe for a late round draft pick or something, but i guess no one is interested in him that much.
well, one couldn't have asked for better news coming into the weekend. So, the question now is when does the countdown for Carle being moved start? As well, who is number 6? Is it Syvret or is it OKT?

well, if it does happen, then i guess we're out of excuses (though there will still be the fact that we can question stevens). aren't a whole lot of scapegoats left. i'm not a huge jones fan by any stretch of the imagination, but he is/was a fine 6th dman, just not at that price. he seems to really get along well with the guys on the team, and from all accounts he's a pretty nice guy. this is really just a homer ****-up. pisses me off that he's waiting until now to do this, but whatever.
ive posted several times that i think jones would be a valuable asset to the phantoms and the increased playing time will allow him to work the kinks out and hopefully return to form. sort of a long term conditioning assignment as well as some time spent mentoring a very young d-corps down there.
so far as i undertsand
if hes claimed off waivers the flyers are off the hooks for his total salary
if he clears and plays for the phantoms he gets paid the same money(snider can afford it) but doesnt count against the cap
if he gets recalled mid season he counts his full amount against the cap
and if he gets claimed off recall waivers were on the hook for 1.375 in ghost money.
i dont think any player has made it back to thier team after re-entry waivers. though im unsure on what the rules are for the plaoffs. this latter part may become important as we have an impressive prospect depth at defense but may have to acquire someone if an injury should occur.
If we have all this build up and promise and Jones actually isn't released, we're forced to cut someone else, and JVR ends up in the minors I will hurt someone.
IF this is true, it will be one of the happiest days since Pronger was aquired. Possibly even topping that. I hate Jones' attitude and crappy play.
Oh and did you notice his quote about how he doesn't think he's going anywhere based on the fact Homer hasn't said anything to him? Is he really that stupid that he thinks they were going to tell him? Wasn't it Darcy Tucker that was walking around the mall when he saw on a T.V that the leafs had bought out his contract? Take it from an employer: when you stop talking to your people it's a bad sign.
