If the CBJ Could Convert a Winger to Defense...

who should it be and why?

We've discussed the glut of NHL-ready wingers and lack of blueliners since last season. One way to resolve both issues is to convert a winger to defense. Do we have anyone that is up to that challenge?

I think the Fedorov switch never worked. Bad idea!

Lock this thread before someone in the CBJ front office sees and passes it along. If the boards can get a freaking cannon installed, it could do this.

Very difficult move, even if they played d as younger players.

But if we had to choose, and some of them could magically make the switch, I would say Boll or Murray. Boll because of his size and Murray just seems like he would be a good dman.

MODIN.
He's got size, a heavy shot, veteran wiles, and he likes to hit.

Modin. He's always hurt, so we wouldn't have to suffer a forward trying to play defense.

Chimera, because I like speed in the back.

The problem is speed on the backpedal and how important positioning is, knowing when to pinch, when to go and so on. Defense is a different position, and that's one reason defensemen seem to take longer to develop.

Are there any teams with the opposite problem as you (a lack of wingers and good depth on the back end)? Wouldn't it probably work out better for you to attempt a trade?

My votes would also be for Modin and Murray. I get the impression both of them could manage it reasonably well.

That said, I still would only go for it if someone twisted my arm. twisted it off, that is

Toronto, theoretically, but Burke apparently has been focusing on the Kessel deal, and on the trade mains posting a thread with Toronto in a trade is a good way to lose your faith in humanity.

Of course it would! But that's no fun to talk about since nothing appears to be happening on the trade front.

This is a good idea but one must start at square one, what winger who is not injury prone plays good two way hockey? I think Nash would be a great defenseman.. He could be the second Bobby Orr! lol

Seriously though, this forward must have two way skills and we have few of them to spare. Forget Modin, I doubt he will play enough games to have an impact, perhaps Chimera but I doubt he would agree.

I actually think Jakub would be a very good defenseman.

Nash would probably be the best forward to convert to a defender Voracek could probably be pretty decent as well.

Jake has shown himself to be relatively defensively responsible. How about a guy like Pahlsson? A former Selke nominee would be a good choice in my opinion.

The problem is a glut of wingers and a shortness of centers.

Moving a center to D doesn't help anything.

D'oh! I need to read more closely. I seriously read winger as forward. I'll just see myself out.

Good lord, let's not and say we did. We barely have enough scoring ability on forward as it is. We may have some depth at forward, but that doesn't mean I want Andrew Murray or Boll playing D. Or that they would solve anything.

This thread is all in jest, for the people thinking that this could actually happen, or for those wanting it to.

Nash.

He does everything already and, lets face it, he is the only player on our team that can do anything worth while. () Yeah...I heard that while I was in Detroit...

The solution is simple.

Hitchcock needs to implement a defensive minded system where forwards are discouraged from scoring and encouraged to play defense...
