I'd like to see Scatchard sign a contract with moose and really work for another chance

The Moose are in town for their games versus Abbotsford Friday and Sunday...nice, easy bus trip for Ellington, Labrie, Oberg, Walsky, Ramsey and Machesney.
Canucks cleverly saving airfare...

I am not sure how many veteran slots the Moose may have open.

Anyone with NHL experience going through today might just stand out a bit too much...
This exactly what;s happening. Gillis wants to lose as few players as possible so he's waiting for the waiver frenzy that should happen very soon. (Plus we get to put Funk, Nycho, Baumer, McIver and Glass on waivers at the exact same time, which will hopefully protect most of them if teams are interested in claiming our players.)

Rome , Glass and Parrish seem to be the only interesting players left.

Hodgson Shirokov and Grabner too of course.

Walsky & Oberg for the Moose this year will be interesting to watch. I wonder if fergo is still around to keep us updated?

Can someone smarter than me let us know if this is doable in terms of cap space used:

Sedins-Burrows
Sammuelsson-Kesler-Raymond
Bernier-Wellwood-Hodgson
Hordi-Johnson-Rypien-Hansen-Shirokov

Bieksa-Obrien
Mitchell-Salo
Ehrhoff-Edler
Lukowich

Luongo
Raycroft

Demitra and Schneider on LTIR until the end of October.

Ignore the lines, just use that personnel.

Send Hodgson back after 9 games.
What happens when Demitra and Schneider are ready to go?

Same here, I hope they have room for him because I think he has a chance to make it back.

Using Capgeek, I come up with us being about $700K under the cap with that roster, $2.169MM if you defer the bonuses.
But I'm a little hazy on how LTIR works at the start of the season. I believe we still have to count Demitra and Schneider's salary...but we are allowed to exceed the salary cap with their replacements' salaries. But how do you designate "replacement" to start the year? Can we just wave a wand and say that Sedin and Bieksa are the replacements? That seems unlikely...
Are the Canucks somehow forced to send down the designated "replacements" when the injured players are healthy? If so, then I guess Lukowich and either Shirokov or Hodgson are the actual replacements.
If that premise is correct, we end up over cap by $3.3M, $740K with deferred bonuses, which would still work, because the replacement players' combined salaries (less bonuses) would be about $2.4M.

Our cap space is essentially the amount of their salaries that we are over the cap + your cap geek number. However, technically our cap space is $0

Thanks for showing up Dave.

It's too bad the poor guy couldn't relive the NHL experience.

Also sad to see Oberg cut, but hopefully he'll be playing a few games this year.

Here's what we'll likely start the season with:

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Shirokov/Hodgson*-Kesler-Samuelsson
Raymond-Wellwood-Bernier
Hordichuk-Johnson-Hansen/Rypien
Hansen/Rypien

Edler-Bieksa
Mitchell-Salo
SOB-Ehrhoff
Rome-Lukowich

IR: Demitra-Schneider

*only one of Hodgson or Shirokov will make the final cut and my gut feeling says that Hodgson will indeed make the final cut.

On defence it seems that unless we trade a player Lukowich or Rome will stick around until Schneider is ready to go.

Up front we don't need to worry about making any other decisions (other then Hodgson or Shirokov) until Demitra comes back and that'll likely be closer to November.

what's the deal on hodgson? I am a big flyers fan but always root for the canucks to take the west. i have been reading nothing but good things about hodgson and really want to see him play. any shot he'll make the team? and if so what kind of role you think he will play?

Hodgson has been set back by a back injury that cost him 6 weeks of dryland training and the start of camp. Still a chance the Canucks keep him, more likely he gets 9 games then goes back to Brampton.
The back injury has significantly affected his mobility and it has really shown in the exhibition games. You can see flashes of some of his talent, but rather than risk injuring Cody against NHLers, they will probably let him go back to junior and the WJC to dominate some more.

Sauve - Been hyping Sauve since day one. This pre-season showed huge improvements over last season but still needing to iron out some elements to his game. People have been complaining about our lack of defensive prospects but I don't think you'll hear that anymore with Sauve's (and Obergs) performance this pre-season. This kid is going to be a monster when he's 23 or 24.

Oberg - I'm not as high on him as others but I liked what I saw. Kind of reminded me of a North American Kraijeck. I'll be interested to see what a year of pro hockey will do to his game.

Labrie - Maybe it's just me but it's always nice to have some size and toughness at center. Seemed rather unnoticeable to me aside from his fights but maybe that's good for a player like him.

Scatchard - I thought Scatchard should've got a contract. Good salty defensive center who I thought would be good for the Moose (maybe he'll go there next?) or a good 13th forward. I thought he got better each game as well and I liked his presence on the ice. Absolutely no skill whatsoever in the offensive zone and had some weird kinks in his game. I hope he gets a job somewhere.

Ramsey - AHL Marek Malik (although I guess Malik himself should be considered the AHL version)

Ellington - Had no idea he was in Camp in that I never noticed him once.

Walsky - Ditto

Cool that Grabner's still here. He probably deserves an early trip to the Moose, but at least this way we can expose him a little longer to NHL pre-season competition.

Shirokov is better pick and probably an even bigger sleeper.

No, not a good sleeper. Hype > Actual likely Production

Even though he's got very little hype, it's still more than he's likely to produce in his first year when there are better sleeper picks out there. And don't give me that "Oh but he's enjoyed playing with Men for a couple years" argument.

EDIT: reading original post... and 'Hodgson' as the original 'sleeper'...... yes Shirokov is a better sleeper. Hodgson's probably one of the worst sleeper picks out there.

You have this on some authority that he enjoys playing with men?

Looked good to me too, though he still made a few blunders and didn't show the ability to control the play, but that will come with time. The skating, size and tool are all there.

I really liked how calm he was with the puck. I haven't seen that in a young kid since Edler. Very promising, best d prospect we have. With Connaughton, Ellington and Funk are also showing quite well, we have gone from one long shot prospect, to five potential NHLers in less than a year. Way to go MG.

Not a center, but the man is built like the Hulk and has no fear of taking the puck to the net.

He will, he actually played quite well, good enough to make most non-playoff teams. He will turn up in Colorado or Nashville, somewhere like that.

Barely noticed him, when I did it was because I was trying to figure out who was out of position

I did, he was pretty much as predicted. In his case, not standing out is a compliment. Has a good first pass for a defensive specialist.

I thought that he played at NHL tempo better than most of our young guys. His shot was accurate and hard, and his passing and hockey sense seemed ok to me, looked hard to knock off the puck too. If he can develop a more physical game he will be a useful third line guy, sort of a Pat Verbeek lite.

That one was pretty fabricated wasn't it?

Wow. As a Battalion fan, I knew that there was tiny, tiny chance that Cody would come back but I wasn't holding out. But if this is the case, better for us haha. Although I want to see him reach the NHL, as after watching him play for 3 years, he is truly an awesome player and person. He is still listed on our roster as a scratch and is still technically our captain. Will have to wait and see. Sucks that he got injured.
