Gretzky?

How about bringing Wayne Gretzky to the Jackets as an offensive assistant? I think he can coach our younger players and teach them how to be superstars. It could drastically improve our offense. Imagine Filatov being under the wing of Gretzky

Just an idea.

I'd just like to take this time to have a moment of silence in memory of all those times Gretzky went freaking bat**** insane yelling at the refs behind the bench.

So true... a fish out of water so to speak. It's interesting that AP on the radio tonight said all but what I did. Wayne needs to stay in the NHL but not as a coach.... I bagged another.

I think I remember hearing that his brother lives in Columbus. Visiting for Christmas maybe?

As far as joining the organization, I think there is about as much chance of that as Doug McClain returning to take over for Hitch.

What part of his illustrious coaching career is it that we want to capture and clutch onto, exactly?

The ability to have on-ice vision versus the ability to truly "understand" the game are very different things. Wayne proved that in his time in Phoenix. Yet, for some reason, many smart hockey people continue to fall into this box of thinking that great hockey players are intellectuals or something, IMHO. I've never heard The Great One talk hockey in a way that blew my mind like Hitch or many other active coaches can.

Oh brother...

Just a refresher---PRE-Columbus, only TWICE in Hitchcock's career has he been outside of the top 15 in goals scoring. Get him players who can score, and score they will.

Three home games=15 goals...22% on the pp. Now that there are players in the lineup who can score, that is what we are doing...we don't need Gretzky for a damn thing.

if the jackets want to add a below .500 coach to the staff. lets go after gretzky.

i think we should stick to what has got us to where we are. not taking steps back.

Agreed whole-heartedly.

Anyway, why would you want him here? Yes, he is "The Great One", but guess what fellas?? He isn't skating anymore! Not to mention the money... oy vey.

I've never understood where people get the idea that just because a guy is an amazing player that they're cut out to be a coach. Same as making players like Sidney Crosby your captain while there are other players on the team who are better leaders (I'm speculating of course, but I think it is safe to say that there are other players on that team who are better suited to lead).

They should hire #28 as a player development coach.

They should do absolutely nothing with regard to Wayne Gretzky.

Done and done.

Just because Wayne could do, doesn't mean he can teach. I obviously think there is a lot of knowledge in his head. I'm not sure if he does a good job of communicating it. Without that, his usefulness is questionable.

Having said that, all coaches great and small and get valuable information from other people. Now that Wayne isn't in the coaching ranks, and it seemed from all the reports Hitch and Wayne had a decent relationship (at worst, they seemed to have a great deal of respect when talking about each other), perhaps Hitch will call up Wayne more often and Wayne be more forthcoming with information that he may not have been able to as a rival coach. Hitch seems more then willing to pick up the phone and call anyone to gain an edge.

But I don't see Wayne taking on a minor role, such as an assistant. Nor does Filatov doesn't strike me as a player that's going to go under anyone's "wing". This kid has as much confidence as I've seen in a while.
