Caps fans are lucky that you are not their GM. Carlo is a highly reguarded defensive prospect, he busted the Gonchar trade, then Glen Sather tried to get him in the Leetch deal. Steen is a damn good center.

Ovechkin is worth no more than those two, getting Stajan and Antropov as well would be grand larceny.

I'll give you a 9th round pick in 2386. I guarantee he will be better Ovechkin, because he will be genetically engineered and have cybernetic implants. Since hockey in that era is played on rocket skates, he's about 100x faster than Ovechkin. Whether or not this pick will be better than the rest of the draft class that year is debateable.

It's a good offer, I'll give you that, but it fails to take into account the glut of quality prospects already in our system. I think it's overkill.

We need a superstar or two, and maybe a veteran presence to cultivate the young talent, and we'll be competitive in two-three years.

Ovechkin
Semin
Fehr
Aulin
Sutherby
Ouellet
Eminger
Morrisonn
Fleischmann
Gordon
Yonkman
Laich
Klepis

(Add our two late 04' first round picks, and two 04' second round picks)

+ Witt, Halpern, Zubrus, Verot, Willsie, Pettinger

We don't need anymore "quantity".

I know, I'm just trying to make a deal that the Ovechkin homer will say 'yes' to

This is exactly what people need to understand......now I know throwing around proposals is fun.....but in the Caps current situation trading AO makes no sense whatsoever....as pointed out that have a very strong group of prospects so getting some good/very good prospects in return doesnt make sense in a quantity for quality trade....the CBA situation confuses things more seeing how we have no idea who will be on the club next time they play (save for a couple guys at most that are locks)....they most certainly need NHL D-men....but no way they move the #1 pick to fill those needs.....and I seem to remember GMGM trying hard to move 3 #1 picks to move up and get Nash a couple drafts ago.....that tells me he really feels the need for a young star forward.....and getting a potential franchise guy is worth multiple good/very good prospects

Even if that first overall has the potential to be a Mario Lemieux?

How about this

The Rangers 1st rounder. 2 second rounders (your choice as we have 4 to choose from) Jamie Lundmark or Tom Poti (again your choice) and we forefit the cash headed our way in the Jagr deal.

for

the 1st overall pick

You know what's funny though. How many Washington Capital prospects have gone on to be major players in the NHL? How many have gone on to be impact players? Yeah, lots of potential, but never have I seen an organization that has so much difficulty developing it's own talent.

You're going to be sorely dissapointed if you think Ovechkin has the potential to be half of what Lemieux is. Most reports I've read list Ovechkin as a solid two-way player with good size and good offensive instincts. He's been compared to Ilya Kovalchuk, but with less offense and more defense. He'll be a great player, one that every team would want, but one of the all-time greats, not likely.

Well, Kovalchuk was every bit as unproven as Ovechkin is now and a package including Zednik, Garon, Komisarek and a 1st along with a few other players/picks (which escape me) wasn't enough to grab him, because they wanted Theodore over Garon(!). We'd probably be surprised at how much a certain GM is willing to pay.

Dudley is the kind of moron that would probably trade all his players over 23yrs of age for Ovechkin [/zing]

Actually he played much longer with the Leafs....who drafted him....and he made at least one all-star team while with the Leafs.....

I dont remember the trade exactly....but I KNOW Zezel was part of the deal.....and I think Rouse or Lalor were too......

As for what -I- would want in a deal for Ovechkin I'm serious....any deal sending away the best draft prospect in over a decade they should get back at least 1 potential franchise guy. The Caps are stocked enuff with above average prospects, they don't need 4-5 more, they need a cornerstone.
