I know there's a HFBoards league already going, I'm not asking for those guys to join. Anyone else interested? The owner left the league after missing the draft, then the replacement owner I found left for no apparent reason... Who wants to help me out? You'll have to be active, but I can assure you that this is a very competitive and deep league, and I'm a VERY good commish. Thanks!!!

I'm looking at my year to year fantasy league, and I've just realized that I've drafted 4 Carolina Hurricanes out of a roster of 17 players.
My biggest concern is the drafting of Jussi Jokinen. I was operating under the assumption that he'd be getting top 6 winger type time, but after reading the Hurricanes vs. St. Petersburg thread, the lineup I saw posted had Jokinen as the 3rd line center. Is this accurate and, as an extension of that, will it damage his production to the point that he's not the viable fantasy option he was last year?
The other 'Canes on my list are ones that I feel confident about, but I'm welcome to other more educated fans telling me what they expect from these players throughout the season. Could I get a conservative estimate on:
Jussi Jokinen
Brandon Sutter
Joni Pitkanen
Cam Ward
Ward is the one I'm admitting to knowing the least about (EDIT: And by this, I mean I know a lot about Ward's status around the league as a potential top goaltender, just not so much about his current condition). As an outsider, I have VERY high hopes that he rebounds from last year's miserable season, and I don't consider it to be very far out of the realm of possibility, but my league is using the "wins" statistic in addition to GAA, SV%, and Shutouts, and I have no idea how fans feel about the team's ability to win a lot of games and contend for the playoffs.
Thank you in advance for dealing with my novelization of fantasy hockey woes.
a conservative estimate on:
Jussi Jokinen
Brandon Sutter
Joni Pitkanen
Cam Ward
First of all, thank you for posting this question in the Fantasy Q&A thread!
Jokinen: No worries on this. First off, it's highly unlikely that he'll spend the entire year at 3rd line center, and in my opinion, he won't be at that spot for more than a quarter of the year. The conservative estimate says that he'll fall off of his 30-goal year with something in the low to mid-20s.
Sutter: Pretty much locked in at second line center. I'd say more than half of the opinion is that he'll have a better scoring year this year by virtue of playing on the second line. My opinion is that he'll have more assists than last year, but his goal scoring will be very similar.
Pitkanen: I can't see much of a reason that his production will drop off this year, but there's always the question of if he stays healthy. Another possible reason that his production drops off is that a good number of assists came on a play with Jokinen on the PP that teams eventually scouted.
Ward: I'd think you'll see one of Cam's better years, but because of poor defense in front of him, his save percent will probably hang around 91% and his GAA will be around 2.60.

Good. I'm really hoping he finds his way back to Staal's line (I've assumed that's where he was, could be wrong), but I really just don't want him to be 3C. Now, in a weird way, it's kind of nice because my league counts Faceoff wins as a stat, and getting that out of a registered LW is nice, but not at the cost of production. I can deal with a 20-30 Jokinen, is that a likely assist number?

As stated above, with FW a counted statistical category, do his faceoffs look improved from last season's sub-500 season? Additionally, is he looking at PP time?

Are wins likely to take that same hit, or will Ward be putting up wins in spite of a rough defensive corps?
Thank you for the great answers to my questions, and for hopefully putting up with a few more.
Question about the yahoo hockey pools, when the live draft takes place does it pick automatically from your pre-draft player rankings list, or do you get to make your picks are the draft goes along?
Jokinen: Thinking about it more, I'm thinking he'll be on the low end of 20 goals, rather than the mid-20s. But that's just my opinion...not sure that many would share it. Assists? I'm guessing he'll suffer a slight drop there as well, but not significant. Also, if he's on a line with Skinner for a substantial amount of time, he may see some benefit of Skinner's scoring ability. Jokinen is a tough one to predict, for sure, but if you're counting on a slight dropoff from last year's totals, then you should be ok. If you're expecting last year's numbers, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.
Sutter: He's likely to get his PP time, and I thought his faceoff % was better than that, but there's a couple of things here: 1) at least in my fantasy league, it's the number of wins rather than percentage, and 2) he seems to be have a technique that would put him above .500. Whether that means he drives his percentage up this year isn't guaranteed, obviously, but he will be taking a lot more, which I think should eventually help in getting more wins.
Ward: I'm guessing he'll get around 30-35 wins. The good news is that you'll be able to gauge this pretty effectively by the time November ends. That will get the team a good set of away games and then a good string of home games. If he/they are struggling, you can cut bait.
I think Tlusty is coming back soon?? When? And what would be his role? 2nd line with Sutter??
Also when is Samsonov coming back? do you think he will end up on the Staal line?
Bertuzzi has been playing with Filppula and tearing it up lately.
Go with him, I guess.
that's what i was thinking....I am a bit torn between him and Williams and both have the same problem - one never knows when either of this guy will get injured. I am limited to 25 moves for the season.
Justin Williams
Tod Bertuzzi
Drew Stafford
Brian Little
Anti Mietinnen
I just picked Williams up in my pool, figured i'd take a chance. He's been doing pretty well on a line with Stoll and Smyth and we all know what he's capable of if healthy.
If available, i'd consider Kopecky, he's been doing quite well paired with Hossa lately.
Want 'Canes Fans Thoughts on My Fantasy Pick of Skinner (Keeper League)
I have a paid league I join in every year and needed a final center that could be an interesting hit or miss....
That pick was, you guessed it, Jeff Skinner.
Who better to ask about this, than 'Canes fans, am I right?
So tell me, what do you guys expect from him? Was it a dumb idea to take a chance on the kid (it's a 16 man league and each team kept 9 players, so Kaberle, Clowe, and Pitkanen were the top picks from NHL'ers from last season) or did I make an epic failure of a pick?
Oh, and he has an assist tonight on a nice breakaway pass. That made my day
Skinner is an absolute beast so picking him up was a good idea. You said you needed a final center but Skins has been playing wing all year so I'm not sure if that will affect you this year.
I dropped Taylor Hall and picked up Skinner in my league. I'm not playing for money so I just wanted the kid on my team.
Skinner has been playing like an offensive beast so far this season. he has had some serious chances. with a little luck, he could easily have more than 3 goals. his little breakout in the Rangers game is just a taste of what he can and will do. quoted by paul maurice: "the only reason you can tell skinner is 18 is the fact that he doesnt shave yet". or something like that. the organization, although rebuilding, has put serious confidence in Skinner and has earned every minute of ice time he gets. you may see him playing with Staal soon and he has a realistic shot of finishing 2nd on the team in scoring.
i dont think you will see him at center, though, so i dont know how that affects your team
Any word on the severity of Pitkanen's injury? I'm thinking of dropping him for a red-hot Robidas.
Of course not...they hardly ever say anything definitive on these types of things. Silly NHL...
From the way they're talking about it, the fact that he dressed for the game following the game where he suffered the injury, and the fact that he didn't make the trip to Florida, I'm guessing that you're looking at a week. It could easily stretch to two, but they way they're talking about it, I would be less likely to believe that he'll be out upwards of a month.
Sorry...that's about as good of a guess as you're going to get.
