San Jose Sharks
Season Record: 43-21-12-6 (104 points)
Against Blues: 2-1-0-1
Playoff Record:0-0

After missing the playoffs last year, San Jose was a surprise winner in the Pacific Division. The Sharks finished strong, going 10-2-1 down the stretch to claim the second seed in the Western Conference.

St Louis Blues
Season Record: 39-30-11-2 (91 points)
Against Sharks: 2-2-0-0
Playoff Record:0-0

Injuries hampered the Blues all year and they won only 6 of 27 games from late December into February. But St. Louis got hot when it mattered most, winning five of their last seven to claim the seventh seed and earn their 25th consecutive playoff berth.

Forwards

The Blues are blessed with the trio of Keith Tkachuk, Doug Weight and Pavol Demitra, who are complimented well by a veteran supporting staff that includes Dallas Drake, Scott Mellanby and recently-acquired forwards Mike Sillinger and Brian Savage. Younger talents like Petr Cajanek and Mike Danton will be needed to take their game up a level. The Sharks don't have one player among the league's top 40 scorers, but anyone in the lineup is capable of stepping up for the offence on any given night. Nils Ekman, Jonathan Cheechoo and Alyn McCauley have had career-best seasons, while veterans Marco Sturm, Patrick Marleau and Vincent Damphousse have also been solid. McCauley has turned a lot of heads this season as a premier defensive forward, and the Sharks' defence only looks better with Curtis Brown acquired from Buffalo.

Defence

The Blues' defence corps has been a walking infirmary this season. Losing Al MacInnis and Barrett Jackman early in the year forced the team to make several adjustments, which included getting veteran Eric Weinrich. Only Chris Pronger had a full season - with his best offensive output since 1999. The Sharks' Brad Stuart was another player who enjoyed career-best numbers, and led the team in power-play assists. Joining him on the blueline are Kyle McLaren and Mike Rathje, who are no strangers to playing a physical game. Jason Marshall, acquired from Minnesota, also play a big physical game.

Goaltending

After a disappointing 2002-2003 campaign that saw him struggle with a 19-28-8 record, Evgeni Nabokov returned to form this year to anchor a very stingy Sharks defence. His career-high nine shutouts trailed only Ed Belfour and Martin Brodeur. Chris Osgood closed out the season as the league's hottest goaltender, posting an 8-3-2 record with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in March.

Statistical Keys to the Series

San Jose sports the league's third best home record at 24-8-7-2 (.695).

With four points in four games, Brad Stuart tied Marco Sturm for the Sharks lead in scoring against the Blues this season.

Speaking of Sturm, the Sharks finished the season 10-4-1 (.700) after he was injured and out for the year.

The trio of Keith Tkachuk, Doug Weight and Chris Pronger has tallied 94 power play points on 61 Blues power play goals; 52.8% of the team's total power play points.

Keith Tkachuk had five points in four games to lead the Blues in scoring against the Sharks this season.

I believe that..

The team that is better on special teams will go on to the next round.

My Predictions
Sharks win in 6
Rathje shuts down Tkachuk
Toskala doesn't get one start
Cheechoo and Korky have 5 goals between the two of them.
Danton gets suspended for a game or two.

And just a random tidbit- should we make playoff avatars like the rest of the fans? I could probably throw somthing together.

Of all the match-ups we could have had, this one worries me the second most (next to Edmonton).

We have better speed up front, but St. Louis is still very solid defensively. Demitra, Tkatchuk, Mellanby....(yes I said Mellanby)...and Pronger on the PP, worry me.

We all know the playoffs are a different time of year...Hopefully, our young guys remember that for THursday.

That Said, SJ 4 St. Louis 3

I also agree with a previous post, if Nabby is better than Osgood, we should win this series.

Oh, anyone else notice the back-to-back? Vesa will get a shot....hope he runs with it.

Interesting stat on how well the Sharks have played with Sturm out. I think if the Sharks have the solid PK they've had all year except for that Nashville game, the Sharks can beat the Blues.

Even if it's back to back I dont expect Vesa Toskala in net for that. Monday and Tuesday are still Nabbies nights IMO.

I'm getting really really Nervous/EXCITED!!! that the playoffs are here....

I'm nervous about the Blues, but i'm confident if the Sharks play the way they have all year we'll win this series.....I think getting a good start to this series is very important and getting these guys some confidence going is key.

Over the Past 13 seaons I have never seen a Sharks team this good...honestly.... I've never been so confident heading into the playoffs.

Do you ask about an existing one, or one that should yet be made?

one guy that bothers me on that roster is Dallas Drake ( "i hate the drake!"-George Costanza ) one borderline hit or cheap shot that might take a shark out or at least get them off their game could hurt them early in a game series. THe Stars knew right away that to beat the sharks they had to challenge them physicly and slow them down, and it worked. I think this team hasen't learned yet how to stand up to a physical challenge, at least I haven't seen it.

oh and this is great I hear Kerry Fraser is calling the game,

I dislike....Dallas Drake as well, not as much as I dislike Doug Weight, Keith Tkachuk... I also dont like Joe Mellanby for the hit on Suter 3 years ago.

Hah, I'm sure there's plenty of people who had their own dislike of Suter however.

GDT Sharks v Blues, Game 1

It takes 16 wins in the post season to hoist the cup. For the Sharks it
starts one game at a time tonite at the tank. We pretty much know
whos starting in net and who's gonna play on what lines.

Sharks win 3-2 with goals from McCauley, Marleau and the Rat. Special teams
will be the difference.

4-1 Sharks.
