Finger is paid 3M for 2 less years or 1.5M less than Redden and Rozsival. And for all the flack Finger takes, he really didn't have a terrible season. He put up 6G-23pts in 66gp, which over a full season projects to 7G-28pts -- for a defensive defenseman! From what I remember, he led the Leafs in blocked shots and hits, and I'm sure he is mentoring young Luke Schenn who plays a very similar game. Compare this to soft, offensive defenseman Redden (3G-26pts in 81gp) and Rozsival (8G-30pts in 76gp) who were given far more PP time, and offensive responsibility than someone like Finger who was relegated to PK and defensive duties for most of the game.

The only reason I consider Finger a bad contract is, that he was overpaid from the start. He had played 70 something games prior to signing with the Leafs, was scratched in the playoffs and is simply a defensive defenseman for gods sake! He has no flash, or real offensive upside, and these types of players are generally unknown fan favorites who sign for 1-1.5M and perform a great job under the radar. Finger is now being paid 3.5M for 3 more years on one of the deepest defense cores in the league..And it doesn't really make sense.. Especially since we had Schenn and Komisarek to start off with and now Burke went out and aquired Exelby..All whom play the exact same role as Finger! He has performed actually quite well on the Leafs, even though people haven't really given him a chance too from the start.

Finger definately isn't an AHL calibre defenseman, he is just better suited for a top 4 role in a less defensively-deep NHL team.
