The refs have been pretty brutal but you have to admit it's gone BOTH ways. How Malik can deliver a 'cross-check' with his elbow is beyond me

The refs are horrible. Lots of cheap calls both ways, as well as blatant penalties going uncalled. I guess they are consistent at least.

Just a crazy game. I haven't seen so much physical play in awhile.

Unfortunately, the refs don't like it as the Flames have already had about 7 PP, and I think the Canucks have had at least 6.

Even crazier, the teams are actually scoring on their powerplays. o_O

4-2 though. Wooo.

i can't believe how many questionable calls there has been both ways. there has been maybe 1 or 2 good calls and the rest have been fantom calls and ones that REALLY should have been left alone in the playoffs. it's an absolute pathetic showing by the officials. a playoff game should never be a special teams battle. i'm sure both teams are upset at the officiating tonight, and the league should be embarassed.

Why do the refs decide to call the little hooks and bs calls in the playoffs? WHY! Let them play 5 on 5 for once..

On a Cloutier note.. he looks like he is trying too hard.. he needs to calm down.

In fairness, I thought Oliwa running Cloutier was the right call, and I thought Malik's penalty was just as well.

Doesn't seem right... Flames fans and Canucks fans alike have something to agree on... HORRIBLE reffing!! We're supposed to be well into despising each other by now (2 periods in)!

Best post of the thread. At least some humour can be found in this debacle.

Absolutely. I even said as much in the post you quoted.

First playoff game in eight years, and we have to put up with the Referees trying to be the stars. This series has a chance to be the best playoff series in the first round, but this isnt even hockey. It's only a pathetic joke that Bettman's NHL has brought about.

One can only wonder how this game would have looked if the officials weren't so incompetent. Even though most of the penalties were a joke, no way we can allow four powerplay goals to a mediocre PP unit like the Canucks. Not nearly good enough.

Mizral Edit: Take it easy man. I know you're emotionally charged, but don't break the rules of the website in the process.

I think Mizral wants you to watch the swearing, this is an all ages board.

It's funny, as soon as I saw Koharski was officiating I was like "uh oh".

Are the refs tonight known for calling more than usual or is this an abnormal game from that perspective?

They have been calling a lot, but the thing is a lot of them are even-ups or phantom calls. They'll call a weak slash, and then let go a boarding or goaltending interference. All goals have been on the PP so far, so they are having some effect on the score as well.

Did anyone else see that "TMMOTI" penalty on Behind the Mask?

I'm still scratching my head.

A whatever, it's in the past. Let's hope the third period is better.

How much you want to bet the officials stop calling all of these penalties in the third in an effort "not to change the outcome of the game?"

Edit: No sooner do I post that than the Flames take another penalty.

Which means the Canucks will be called in about 90 seconds.

Okay, guys, that was a real penalty. Pretty dumb for Niemenin to do considering how the refs have been calling it.

But I can't believe the nucks are 4/6! Is Calgary's PK usually this bad?

An even strength goal? The referees must be pissed. They didnt get to call a penalty before that.

Ville Niemenen had better be benched for game 2. His stupidity is the difference in this game.

That's the weird thing, it's usually awesome. They went something like 30 kills in a row near the end of the season without a goal.
