If Long fails the physical does that mean Petr Sykora is next on the list?
Certainly Rob N is out of the question since he went to NJ?

No one really minds that, Turris could really use that year in the AHL at this point.

Yup, he's eligible for incentives as long as it's a one year deal.

I'm sure it was said in jest, but Sykora signed with Minnesota last week.

Coyotes reach deal with Robert Lang

Quote:
The Phoenix Coyotes, who open the regular season Saturday in Los Angeles against the Kings, have reached a tentative contract agreement with center Robert Lang, contingent on him passing a physical.

Upside: Lang brings scoring depth and much needed veteran leadership/playoff experience.

Negatives: This has the potential to be Mike Ricci part 2.

Who else have we brought in prior to being put out to pasture?

Why do we need Veteran Leadership? Is Doan, JoVo not big enough of a Vet?

Not tony or ricci

We paid Tony Amonte endless dough something around 6.5 and Ricci was never a scorer.

This has real potential especially with Vrbata, Prucha and Hanzal.

You put all them plus Z out and have a Czech power play!

Funny thing is it would likely be pretty good! Lang and Z at the points, Vrbata on the half wall and Marty in front of the net.

Nope. Mike Ricci in the sense that like Ricci, Lang is on the downside of his career and a lingering injury may keep him out of the lineup.

18-21-39 in 50 games before his injury last year. IF he's healthy can't compare to the JR and BH signings, IMO.

I guess my point was why do we need a signing for "vet leadership?" I think we have adequate leadership, wasn't that the rationale for signing a Ricci, Hull, JR etc.

It's worth the gamble. No doubt about that. It's probably going to cost Kevin Porter his spot. I think that's a good gamble. Porter isn't going anywhere. The AHL isn't going to hurt him. Lang is a much better bet to get 20-30-50 than Porter is. We need to have a good year. This doesn't hurt the re-build in the slightest, and it makes us a little more competative for this season. Great move. We're allowing the kids to develop and filling the roster with more consistant veteren types. This should help prevent the kind of post ASG collapse we endured, last season.

The worst case scenario is that a combination of his already slow pace, the sliced tendon, and his thirty eighth birthday have reduced him to a guy who can't produce offensively, in transition, or in the defensive zone. Well, guess what, that's what we had in Hollweg, anyhow. Difference is Lang won't take any penalties. Plus, he can at least win face-offs.

Our team is so young, adding an older vet like this is not a bad thing, especially considering he can still put up nearly a point per game.

This is a classic stop-gap signing. Turris isn't ready, so they're bringing in a vet that can fill the role for a year.

I hope this goes along the lines of Vrbata & No Panic Yanic and not Hull & JR.

Something else to consider. Lang had eight power play goals in fifty games. Doan had ten in eighty two, and Jokinen had six in fifty seven as a Coyote. Vrbata had seven in seventy six, his break out year. Mueller had seven in seventy one back in his rookie year. Speaking of two years ago. Mueller had fifty four points and Vrbata had fifty six. That same year Lang had fifty five. Last season, Lang's points per game average was .78 which is higher than Vrbata's in his break out year, Mueller's in his rookie year, or Olli Jokinen in his time as a Coyote. Lang's points per game average was better than Jokinen's, last year, regardless of team, in fact. Better than Lombardi's combined total, too.

Basically, if Lang can be as effective this year, as he was last year, while also remaining healthy, he could easily end up our second leading scorer.

Hull, Ricci, JR were WAY past their primes. Lang, if healthy, can add scoring depth to the roster (among other things).

Montreal fans seem to like Lang. They don't have many nice things to say about us, but it's their board, so ignore it...

My Detroit fan friends all hate the guy. I kinda take that as a good sign for some reason.

I think it's a question of expectations and pay grade. LA fans despise Roenick. We all thought he was okay as a checker, and Sharks fans LOVE him. Expectations and pay grade got lower and lower at each destination. It' probably the same for Lang from Detroit to Chicago to Montreal. Maybe when this is official, I'll ask some 'Hawks fans for their opinions on him. If we can get 20-30-50 out of him, we should all be extremly pleased. Fourty points is probably good enough. I don't know if Porter would've scored fourty. Certainly not much more than fourty.
