Confirmed, that I heard it.

And here I was ready to start a "Mats Sundin To Sign for the Remaining 4 million in Cap Space" Speculation thread.

Even with Demitra on LITR, you can't use that money on a significant signing if you intend on having Demitra back.

If this meant Shirokov is Moosebound, doubt it, I'd be pretty pissed. Demitra hasn't even started skating I don't believe.

He's at the very least on the IR. I have a feeling Blake Price is mis-reading something.

Blake price is saying that Demitra might be out for 7 games.... So I don't see Shirokov being sent down.

Yeah, this doesn't seem to make much sense. But I'm no expert with all the intricacies of the CBA/Cap/LTIR, etc.

So he is on injured reserved then and not LTIR? Are players on IR considered to be on the roster?

Kevin Bieksa and Rick Rypien did not skate Tuesday with minor injuries. Bieksa tweeked his groin against the Oilers and is expected to skate on Wednesday. Rypien is ill, but is also expected to practice on Wednesday. The status of the two players likely means Aaron Rome and Tanner Glass will not play in the opener, but the team will carry 22 players.

Jannik Hansen (broken hand), Pavol Demitra (shoulder) and Mathieu Schneider (shoulder) could all start the season on the Long-Term Injured list, but Schneider is expected to skate Tuesday. Technically the team has 23 players on the roster as Demitra has not been put on LTI for cap purposes, but more moves could be forthcoming in that regard.

The Canucks are under the salary cap, but need to reach the cap in order to get full LTI benefit/cap relief. As a result, Schneider could be on the active roster for the start of the season so they can reach the cap, even though he is not expected back until mid-October.

Alain Vigneault says Sergei Shirokov would have made the team regardless of Demitra's injury status. He has been outstanding through camp.

The team placed Brad Lukowich, Lawrence Nycholat and Michael Funk on waivers Tuesday. Funk and Nycholat will go to Manitoba of the AHL, but general manager Mike Gillis is looking into other options for Lukowich. - TSN

So Shirokov is for sure safe, not much doubt though.

Looks like we apparently have the Flyers rule where the cap doesn't apply to us....

I guess it works according to cap geek. I don't know how, but it apparently does. Either way though unless Demitra and M Schneider take turns on IR we're still gonna have to make a move. M Schneider won't be on there for long I don't think so hopefully Gillis has a trick up his sleeve.

Pratt is pretty damn stupid, he has no idea why they have him on the active roster and he was just trying to get out of it the easiest way by making assumptions " as long as you're under it, you're under it, it doesn't matter if you're 50 cents or 100 million". What the ****.

Well he's talking the talk...

This sentence doesn't make much sense to me. You can't place a player on the LTIR until the day before the season starts (i.e. tomorrow), and not being on the LTIR doesn't imply you are on the active roster. As Demitra has yet to even skate with the team I believe he will be starting on the IR.

The reason why Demitra wouldn't be starting on the LTIR is that if we start the season over the cap, we will be deemed to have replaced the players on the LTIR already. As Schneider and Hansen are enough to cover the amount we are over the cap by, it makes sense to put them on tomorrow, and Demitra on after the season starts. Then we get to use his full 4 Million for temporary cap relief. (Please note, we can't save unused portion of cap relief provided by the LTIR.)

This cap business is hella confusing. Now we need to add MORE salary to EXCEED the cap in order to be BELOW the cap when players returning from injury are back in the lineup?

Whooooooosh.

Ya, this still doesn't make sense to me. I understand we get additonal cap space to accomodate the replacement player. But if I understand it right, we basically only get enough cap space to accomodate that replacement player. How is it beneficial to be pushed right up against the cap before replacing him then? Either way the entirety of any extra cap space is expended on the replacement player, and for the duration of the injury we are spending at the cap (whatever that cap might be).

Or is the benefit in that the additional cap space awarded is awarded at the start and static (as opposed to flexible, as I assumed above). So if we're at the cap, and it's extended by 4M for Demitra's replacement it becomes 60.9M. Then we adjust our roster down to 58M (while Demitra's still injured), and our cap stays at 60.9M and thus we're able to save up the 2.9M in relief space on a pro-rated basis for the duration of the injury?

I'd love for someone to clarify this for me.

I think it's saying you get more relief for the player on the IR if you're closer to the cap ?
