If Babchuk, Carson and Rodney ALL come back, then that's a lot of defensemen:

Pitkanen
Gleason
Corvo
Babchuk
Kaberle
Wallin
Rodney
Carson

One of those won't be on the team next year.

I have little doubt that both Rodney and Carson will be on two-way deals next year. There's no way we're going into the season with 8 defensemen when Conboy is our 13th forward, that would be insanity.

Just up on the Canes twitter feed:

The Hurricanes have re-signed depth forwards Michael Ryan and Patrick Dwyer and are still working on something else.

I think we may see Ryan take Bayda's 4th line/emergency 3rd line role.

will be interesting to see what those turn out to be, I'm hoping two-way deals. I'll add the AHLers to the OP here in a bit as we find out more info during UFA frenzy.

Correct as usual.

Ryan will be $500K at NHL level, $100K at AHL, with a $150K guarantee.
Dwyer will be $500K at NHL level, $105K at AHL.

Two-way deals for both Dwyer and Ryan.

Dwyer: His new two-year contract will pay him $500,000 per season at the NHL level, and $105,000 at the AHL level.

Ryan: His new one-year contract will pay him $500,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 at the AHL level, with $150,000 guaranteed.

2.2 million for Kaberle might be one of the worst spent money in the NHL.... The guy is just horrible.

That signing is really holding us back. How big of a cap hit would it be if we bought him out?

Frantisek is not too bad player, to be honest. 2.2 is too much for him, i know but he's not terrible.

Thanks guys, just added them. Which format do you guys like more, the lines or the straight down breakdown?

I believe 2/3rds of his salary paid out over 2 years so just shy of 800K per both seasons.

I wouldn't mind it too much if he was making between 1.2 and 1.5 this year to be frank (no pun intended). That would still give plenty of salary flexibility.

I like the straight down breakdown. The lines could change and it makes it look a bit cluttered.

Do a straight down breakdown with the salaries, then include the lines without salaries at the bottom. It's important to make sure you've got enough roster spots filled.

I had a thought on the Conboy one-way deal this year. If the deal is bugging the team a bit because he really doesn't deserve it and it's hamstringing them a bit as to roster spots, why not buy him out?

For 333K (2/3 of 500K), he's a UFA with no real options. We can re-sign him to a two-way deal, and if he spends half the season in the minors, it will end up costing about the exact same cash outlay and we don't have to fly him around the country for no reason.

If we don't want Conboy he will be bought out or waived. His contract is no big deal either way.

If it came to that big of a deal i'm pretty sure we could just place him on waivers then when he clears send him to Albany. We'd be stuck paying him his 500k, like we had to pay Melichar his salary last season. But he wouldn't be taking a roster spot. Buyout would work to if we simply didnt want to pay him.

I have a feeling however JR is happy with Conboy based on he can play either forward or defence and adds some toughness to the lineup. He may not finish the season on the team, but I don't think JR has a problem with him starting there.

There might be an offer on the table for Seidenberg, but I doubt Seidenberg comes back for it at this point. Someone will pick him up for more than Rutherford was willing to offer.

Plus, at this point I think a more defensive minded player would make sense. That could be McKee, but I also wonder if the Canes could go after an RFA like Polak or swing a Babchuk-Polak deal. I've included the 2009 RFA compensation levels below from the NHL:

Quote:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=34760
OFFER COMPENSATION
$994,433 or below None
Over $994,433 to $1,506,716 Third-round choice
Over $1,506,716 to $3,013,434 Second-round choice
Over $3,013,434 to $4,520,150 First-round and third-round choice
Over $4,520,150 to $6,026,867 First-round, second-round and third-round choice
Over $6,026,867 to $7,533,584 Two first-round choices, one second- and one third-round choice
Over $7,533,584 Four first-round choices
That leaves a lot of leeway for the Canes (or someone else) to offer an RFA and only lose a 2nd round pick. Any RFA you try to sign for a 3rd would be matched.

Also, the full list of Canes who were qualified and are still RFAs as of today: Mike Angelidis, Anton Babchuk, Casey Borer, Brett Carson, Justin Peters, Bryan Rodney, Tuomo Ruutu.

As one who took a shot at the Conboy 1-way deal for 09-10 on another thread, others pointed out it's not a huge issue. He'll be the last man on the roster because he can fill in as a defenseman or forward when the flu bug strikes on a long road trip, and he's psycho enough to fill the MAD role of an NHL enforcer even at a smaller size.

I don't think you can buy someone out then re-sign them. Don't quote me on it, though.

44.725 million plus Ruutu (2.5-3.0 million for this season), plus Carson or Rodney (~600K), plus Babchuk (at least 1 million), plus another forward TBD. Even if Babchuk is convinced to play for the qualifier (I don't see that happening) that would leave 1-2 million for the 4th line left wing. I don't see another D signed, and any forward will probably be 4th line and PK.
