6.3 per is quite a chunk of change. Great goalie though.

Worth every penny as long as they make the playoffs.

His stats over the last 4 years have improved each year so its seems like a good signing. What does this say about Mike Murphy who seems to have all the tools to be a good goalie at the NHL level? I see Murphy is still a couple years away but what he has done in the OHL is pretty damn impressive.

He asked for and, for all intents and purposes, received the Miller contract (5 yr, $31.25 mil).

He's very important to the canes, good for them to lock him up.

See IMO this is the guy you give a 6 yr deal too, he's only 25 and in the prime of his career. When he turns 31 you re-evaluate and decide whether he deserves another contract. Because as we've see in the NHL goalies are still at the top of their game into their mid 30s

The $6.3M may seem high, but it's the money you have to pay to get a top notch goalie locked up long term.

Lundqvist signed a 6 yr deal last summer and has a cap hit of $6.875M
Backstrom's 4 yr deal is a cap hit of $6M
Miller's 5 yr deal is worth $6.25M

The only way to get a young #1 goalie locked up long term for less money is to make the contract even longer {ie. Luongo's 12 yr deal, cap hit $5.33M (once new contract goes into effect)}

Murphy is really not relevant to this discussion at all. He's had a great couple years in the OHL, but he's not a top prospect or anywhere near NHL-ready.

Good for the Canes, ward is one of the best goalies in the league. 6.3 per is alot, but as previously stated, that's the going rate for a goalie of ward's calibre.

I just remember reading some about him and how he has dominated the OHL in regards to his position and figured he sounds like he may get a shot. Granted he is only 20 years old he has put up some very impressive numbers with Belleville. So if he is not a top prospect within the Goalie ranks in Carolina then who is?

CapGeek now tweeting that Cam Ward also gets a no-trade clause in his escalating six-year, $37.8 million contract with the #nhl #hurricanes.

That's a lot of money, but Cam Ward is a guy that you don't mind paying. Great move for the Canes.

He's a great goalie......seems like a good contract.

Didn't he play like 30 games in a row last year?

He gives you another name to keep people focused on Carolina for years to come as well as a guy who keeps a good image and is very helpful in the community

A $6.3 million hit is a big one, but he stays in Carolina for him prime years... He is only 25, so that keeps him in Carolina through 31... Also includes a no trade clause...

If he continues to improve (he's gotten better every year) then this is probably a good deal and puts him and Staal together for a long time to cornerstones to a small market team...

I think having some good prospects expecting to join the team in the next few years and money coming off the books for us allowed the Canes to make this signing

What a good signing, if they didn't get him signed, the Canes would have next to nothing on the back end.

Great signing, though pricey. He wouldve gotten 6+ on the open market.

Seems a bit expensive, but he's a great goalie. I just would have expected a bit less on a 6 year deal.

And he played both games of many back to backs, and still brought it in the playoffs until he tweaked his back, and then still did a pretty good job.

I'm very glad to have him locked up long term, and the terms certainly seem fair to me.
