Matt Gilroy is already my favorite player! He plays the same game as Mike Green, and Brian Leetch.....just hope he can be as good as they are/were if not better.

True he plays the same game -- Ice Hockey

By age 25, Brian Leetch was a point a game player.

People need to ramp down their expectations for him. I hope he can reach 40 points and exceed the defensive skills of Andy Delmore.

Better than one of the greatest Offensive Dmen/Overall Dmen of all time and better than the best Offensive Dman in the league right now, who is still younger than Gilroy?

Gilroy hasn't played one NHL regular season game yet and we are comparing him to proven PPG defensemen, this type of thinking/comparisons will only lead to criticism down the road.

The Rangers signed the 25-year old defenceman this summer as a free agent and describe Gilroy as an outstanding skater who is expected to push the pace of the game, spend time on New York's power play and contribute offensively.

Not as long as MDZ is around... seriously did Dreger watch a single Rangers preseaon game? If he did he'd know it was MDZ getting the PP time.

i'm just optimistic that the future is bright with Gilroy and DZ....if they can show they belong they will only get better over the years

oh and btw TSN consensus had Rangers 7th which is where I think they wil be ......actually I think 6th over the Devils

Gilroy was on the 2nd power play unit throughout the preseason.

I think Viktor Stalberg will challenge for the Calder.

Didn't he get sent back down? could be wrong but i was watching leafsTV and i think dangles mentioned it. Not sure though.

Gilroy may be simular to green but theres 2 differences
1) He dosen't look like he just got out of bed at all times
2) Hopefully he won't have his own "gangsta" website

You can't really argue with this list. Sure it would be nice to see Anisimov on it, but the fact remains that it doesn't look like he's going to be given a chance to play a significant role this season. That could change obviously with injuries and what not, but as of now I think it is correct to leave him out.

As far as the order is concerned, my top 3 look like this:

1. Varlamov (how Theodore is their #1 I have no idea, and it won't last)
2. Van Riemsdyk (coming into a great offensive situation in Philly - scary)
3. Hedman (I don't think he'll have the necessary "flash" in year 1 to get the Calder)

Tavares is a really good player, but he's going to be limited by his situation on the Island all year. He just doesn't have the supporting cast to allow him to compete for the Calder in my opinion.

He made the team according to TSN on Wed.

Yup, he'll get PP time. Especially if Del Zotto struggles at all

I like Stalberg too.
NHL Live said that he will start the season on a line with Matt Stajan and Jason Blake.

The REALLY exciting thing is that the Rangers have four players who could have legit shots at the Calder this year (Gilroy, MDZ, Anisimov and, if he gets called up before Christmas, Grachev). When's the last time that was the case?

I think MDZ will be better than Gilroy, but that's just my opinion...

If Gilroy isn't on the Power Play, I'm not quite sure why he is on the team at all.

I'm pretty sure it'll be Kotalik-MDZ on the first unit and Gilroy-Redden on the second unit.

(And with Torts in charge, I'm also pretty sure that it'll get switched up plenty of times during the year.)

Did you watch any preseason games? He's not just a Power Play specialist.

How are we really comparing Gilroy to them? Were not talking about stats or saying that he will be as good or better than them. What we are saying is what the poster before you said that you quoted and that is, Gilroy plays a style of game like the Mike Green does and Leetch did. I dont know how you can deny that considering how aggressive Gilroy has been rushing the puck up the ice, jumping into the play, and just his overall offensive ability. Those 3 things to me sounds a lot like the type of game Mike Green is playing right now.
