I look at our team now and even without Hodgson and/or Sundin I still think we have one of the best lineups to date.. As some of our core guys mature and even our rookies about to have breakout seasons, it seems like the Canucks are really coming together as a great group.

I think we can go further than we have..
It looks good on paper. Our "second line" or line "2A" is still a question mark, in my opinion. Samuelsson was Detroit's 3rd liner. Shirokov isn't a proven top 6 forward. When Demitra comes back, his health will constantly be a question.

I wish we had Sundin.

Jesus Christ. Garrett picks the Canucks to win the Cup every year. It's part of his charm though. What a goof.

The season isn't complete without Garrett picking the Canucks. Biggest homer ever. <3

Also Ferraro picking the Canucks is scary, he used to hate them so much.

High expectations usually spells disaster, I hope for this season sake they put up a fight for a playoff spot. Don't think its a sure guarantee.

Underdog role dammit!

I like Zack FitzGerald

I'm willing to sacrifice that year to get rid of Nonis and bring about the Gillis Administration.

Also, I don't buy Ryan Kesler as a second line center.

True, I still can see third line guys playing well and stepping up to our 2nd. Raymond has looked better than ever, and Slim Welly seems more committed than before. Ps: did glass remain?

Yeah. I mean, everyone says this about their own players, but I truly believe Wellwood/Bernier/Raymond will have improved immensely.

And don't get me wrong... I love our defence, our goaltending, our first line scoring, our 2B line, and our fourth line... but our Kesler line just doesn't do it for me. I guess I just have a grudge on Samuelsson.

Just to be fair, if we get Richard that year then we will probably make the playoff and Bourdon might not have died. So the trade would not be as bad since we might still have Bourdon and we would not have picked Hodgson.

Last year Canucks were underrated, they exceeded expectations.

This year expectations are high, that will work against them.

However, the core of the roster is unchanged from last year and with lines and pairings that are mostly set (AV did all his "experimenting" last year ), team should be much more productive.

On paper, this is a better team than last year:

G: + Luongo + no injury - Olympics distraction = +1
D: + Ehrhoff + Schneider + Rome - Ohlund = +2
1st line: + Burrows 82 games + Sedins peaking = +1
2nd line: + Shirikov + Samuelsson - Sundin = 0
3rd line: + more mature = +1
4th line: - older Johnson/Hordichuk + depth to replace them = +1
PP: + Ehrhoff + Schneider + Shirikov - Sundin = +
PK: + more options = +

ONCE AGAIN, this is for everyone (including that those TSN panel of "experts") that think Nonis walked away from a deal that would save our prospects or young guys.

The Canucks offered a package that included prospects Luc Bourdon and Cory Schneider along with a first, second and third-round draft pick for Richards. It's a proposal that Lightning general manager Jay Feaster won't confirm, but admits the team was strongly considering.

Thank god we didn't land him. Brad Richards is one of the most overrated and overpaid players in the league.

If there was ever proof that Nonis was a horrible GM, this is it.

I don't know if I'm a big fan of all this hype. I don't get it really .. we didn't do much in terms of adding big names. It seems like we're touted to be better because we signed guys that were already on the team.

Even if people are realizing that the Sedins are front line players and that we do actually have a decent team, it seems that realization is leading them to overrate instead of underrate the team.

Well, I hope they're right.

lets face it - they are speculating.

no matter how good you are at analysis something always happens you don't expect.

who saw Boston dominating last year?
who saw CBJ making the playoffs, or STL? Actually who saw the central DIV dominating like that?
who saw PHNX sucking that bad after looking like they were going to make the playoffs mid season?

...on and on and on and on like Journey

Yea I heard Gillis was going to trade Bieksa to Tampa Bay too.

Oh wait, now he denies it.

Maybe there's something about this Lightning franchise we shouldn't trust, when it comes to trade rumors.

I guess I'm missing the part where Edler is in that package. I keep re-reading, but his name doesn't appear. Gosh golly, I must be stupid.

Let's hope we can acquire another top 6 forward along the season. I don't see us making much damage with the top 6 we currently have. I really thought Sundin would've been the piece we were missing, but obviously that wasn't the case. I guess we'll see what he'll do, but to think Samuelsson and Shirokov will contribute at a top 6 level is pretty damn optimistic.

We lost 7 of the last 8 games, and still almost made it. How is that no margin for error? If we'd even won 3 of the last 8 we're in. We had margin, we just used it up.

I welcome the increased expectations. If this team is ever going to be considered a perennial contender, a consistently elite team, they will need to learn to live up to this level of expectation.

It's going to be another season of more of the same. Good or very good, depending on your perspective. But not good enough.

I don't think we have the answer in place to play with the Sedin twins. Samuelsson and Burrows aren't the answers. We have very good depth up front, but we don't have that legit difference-maker for the second line, unless a) Demitra stays healthy and produces; b) Wellwood figures out what it takes to be the productive forward he should be; or c) Raymond really breaks through after a sophomore jinx. And we don't have that true ace defenceman. But that's nothing new for Canuck fans. Have ever ever had that true ace defenceman?

I look at this team right now, and I see a team that will probably, once again, win the division and win a round. But that's just not good enough. Not anymore. Since the start of the 1991-92 season, we're 7-4 in the first round and 1-6 in the second. I don't see much to get excited about if it's another second round elimination this year. And I don't know why I should expect better than a second round elimination this year.

I love the fact this year that the team isn't talking about playoffs again. They are talking about focusing on the task at hand. Before the 07/08 season, Louie said that "..he wished they could jump directly to the playoffs". They missed the playoffs that year... This year they seemed to have learned and seem much more focused on the present tasks at hand.

Should be a good year.
