I am not sure that this is a bad thing. We know both are capable of playing very well, even if one is showing signs of a sophomore slump issue. Both are competitive enough that if the one falters the other will push himself to get the chance. We might experience a blow up in one game and lose 8-2 but then win the next one 4-0 with the other goalie. This also allows us to sit the 'first' one for back to backs.
It's going to be sad to see one of them go (I mean like in the long run one of them has to go to make way for the 'next gen'. I personally thought it would be Ellis, but if he continues to play like he did in the preseason I wouldn't mind it being Rinne.)
Notwithstanding the 4 goals let in, Rinne looked good in the last Sat. night pre-season game. Still, I would give the start to Ellis against his old team and give Rinne the home opener.

I agree. It's a win-win for Trotz. He rewards Ellis for the pre-season by putting him up against a team he usually does well with and he keeps Rinne happy by giving him the start in the home opener.
I'm a veteran of multiple message boards and I have a unique ability to gage the average points of psychology in fans. It's almost formalic the way people react. I could seriously write a book.

Other people call that "sociology".

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
Ellis has a .913 save percentage and 2 career shutouts against the team that drafted him, while Rinne has never played against Dallas... I'd go with Ellis, just throwing that out there.
in the past flip flopping in the net has cost this team dearly. Rinne.
by the past do you mean the season that Mason struggled and he nearly singlehandedly kept us in games by shutting the door night after night, or last season that was admittedly not his best work?
I think we dismiss his talents too easily around here. I also think that his problem is not flopping but rebound control.
I desperately need a 3rd goalie on my fantasy team and Ellis is one of the best available FA's. I understand Ellis had a good preseason but we all know preseason means very little. Does Ellis have a realistic chance of stealing the starting job back and getting the majority of the starts for Nashville? Could you end up with a 50-50 platoon?

He won't be a starter, but should be a very solid 3rd goalie on your team
You have to go with Ellis here simply because it sends a message to everyone in the lockerroom that your starting based on this year....not last years results. This will be good for Klein, Rinne, and a few others I think .
