You know, this might be the first time ever defending a leaf... but Sundin did want to finish his career there.

its the leafs who did not want him.
he didn't waive his NTC, wanting to stay in toronto.

they broke his mighty sweedish heart and booed him out of town.

hey! guess that wasn't defending the leafs! pheww i'm safe.

I know it's tempting to write that off as quantity for quality, but really, the only questionable player on that list may be Teddy Purcell.

But still, the Kings would have some sweet lines if they pulled this off:

Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Kovalchuk-Stoll-Brown
Lewis-Handzus-Simmonds
Ivanans-Richardson-Clune
Why would they want Frolov when hes a UFA?

Start with Jack not your secondary prospects and your future ufa.

a fair deal is Jack, Schenn and a first, this is a potential 60 goal scorer here, not trash.

Why would they want Kovalchuk when he's a UFA? If he doesn't sign with Atlanta, there's no way he signs with LA.

The Kings literally cannot give up Johnson (they only have 2 offensive defensemen), and I would say that Moller is just as good of a prospect as Schenn

Hmm, I seem to remember that the Pens traded away the 15ht (or 16th) OA pick in the 07 draft + their 08 1st rnd pck + 2 roster players for another thrasher player who hnestly though he's god, can't hold Kovy's jock strap. I don't think that either two 1st rnd picks or a prospect that was recently takne in the 1st nd and a 1st plus a couple of decent 3rd/4th line roster players is unreasonable for someone like Kovy. Forsberg returned TWO former 1st rnd picks (Upshall and Parent), a 1st and a 3rd rnd pick. I'd say that's probably in the right ball park for him.

If Kovalchuk is available come July 1st, he will be a Ranger. Don't ask me how or why, just I'm sure Sather won't pass up the opportunity to acquire a superb talent like him.

If I was Kovalchuk I would be taking a long look at ovechkin in washington. They were a bad team, and crowd attendance was low. But since they made the playoffs, and started to click they've sold out for this season, and the town is singing the capitals and ovechkin. I see alot of similarities between the capitals of the mid 2000s and the thrashers. I think Kovalchuk would love to be to atlanta what ovie is to washington.

Although he'd have to keep his kids the heck away from the team, otherwise the next thing you know, Ovy's giving them rogue golf cart/temple of Doom rides...

I see him staying with ATL cause they offer him a contract no one will be able to come close to, a 10+ million dollar a year contract.

Hasn't he already had the chance? When did Kovalchuk enter the league, and when did Ovechkin? No one in the current NHL is Ovechkin... and if Atlanta could trade Kovalchuk for Ovechkin, they would without a second's thought.

Kovalchuk (and Ovechkin - but he's not at issue) deserves to play in a hockey market. He would be to Edmonton what Ovechkin is to Washington (except, Edmonton already sells out every game). And contrary to the Ranger's supporter, I doubt any team goes as hard after Kovalchuk (were he available) as Edmonton does - third times a charm .

edit: A top line consisting of a Russian (Kov), a Canadian (Horc), and a Czech (Hem); what more could on ask for... 'we' also have MSP coming down the pipe. Edmonton Olers - the U.N. of Hockey teams.

In terms of big market teams with money to spend who might become contenders in the next few years, the main two that come to mind are Colorado and Toronto.
Colorado won't be a contender for a bit, but could be, and the Rangers have a better chance of signing him than either of those two teams.

Awesome sn, you play Halo?

Joe Sakic did sign the Ranger offer sheet in 97.

I highly doubt that, considering their recent free agent history, and their troubles in getting players to come play for them. Heatley didn't want to play there. Nylander broke an agreement. Who was the last big name UFA forward they signed?

Agreed. Kovy to Edmonton is a real stretch.

Kovy will be a Ranger

the kings fans are basically trying to rip the thrashers off, they won't want Frolov that's for sure.

Like I said the price will be huge, kings better start with premium players who are not UFAS

If Kovalchuk becomes an UFA, I have a feeling Sather will do whatever he has to in order to make room for him. When it comes down to it, Kovalchuk will be a Ranger.

He'll be a Ranger, somehow, some day. whether it be this summer, or after he wastes a few more years of his career in Atlanta.

The real strength of Kovalchuk is that he will produce 40-60 goals no matter what line he is on or who he is playing with

for example

You have that 1st line for the primary (non Kovy) offensive guys

And then you have a bunch of deadbeat "second liners" (IE Jarret Stoll, Dustin Brown) on the 2nd line, put Kovy on it... boom... 50 goals, doesn't matter...

That's the real beauty of having Kovalchuk. No need for secondary scoring - he is secondary scoring.

If he becomes a UFA, with Burke at the helm and nearly 20 million available for UFA's, I have faith the Burke will get him in Toronto. Just a hunch....

I remember people were saying the same thign about Ovechkin when he was a rookie, that he would be wasting his career in Washington, and look at that team now. Kovalchuk is obviously older, but with his presence Atlanta will be a playoff team soon. I expect him to re-sign there.
